2016 Chao Physician-Scientists Awards

This year’s Baylor College of Medicine Chao Physician-Scientist Awards have been announced. The purpose of these awards is to provide funding for young investigators who are beginning their independent research careers. The awards are made possible through the generous support of the Ting Tsung and Wei Fong Chao Foundation of Houston. This year’s awardees are:

Dr. Lisa Forbes, assistant professor of pediatrics – immunology, allergy and rheumatology

Dr. Jennifer Posey, instructor of molecular and human genetics

Dr. Vivien Sheehan, assistant professor of pediatrics – hematology/oncology

Samuel awarded grant from Brain Research Foundation

Dr. Melanie A. SamuDr. Melanie A. Samuel, assistant professor in the Huffington Center on Aging at Baylor College of Medicine, received an $80,000 Fay/Frank Seed Grant from the Brain Research Foundation. She is one of 12 recipients selected from leading research institutions across the country to receive the grant, which will help her launch early phases in her research. Samuel’s research focuses on dissecting and analyzing molecular control of synaptic reprogramming – how neurons alter and restructure connections with our neurons. The results will help define molecular targets for repairing nervous system injury.

City of Houston proclaims June 20, 2016 as James Mervyn Adams Day

Adam, Kline and WallaceOn June 29 an event was held honoring the legacy and retirement of Dr. James Adams, neonatologist at Baylor and Texas Children’s Hospital, where he was presented with a Proclamation from the City of Houston designating, Thursday, June 30, 2016 as James Mervyn Adams Day. In 1978, Adams established the first Texas Children’s Hospital Neonatal Transport Service, eventually becoming known as the Kangaroo Crew Neonatal Transport Service. Adams was the first physician to design, develop and implement a new Texas Children’s Hospital Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Program and a Pediatric Respiratory Care Program, bringing neonatal nurse practitioners and respiratory therapists to the forefront of newborn care in the TCH NICU.

DocTalk on July 13 on laser vision correction

The next DocTalk is Wednesday, July 13, at noon at the McNair campus, conference room B, with Dr. Zaina Al-Mohtaseb, assistant professor of ophthalmology, on laser vision correction. DocTalk is a series of informal lunchtime talks on a variety of health topics with Baylor doctors, followed by a question-and-answer session. Eligible employees who attend can earn BCM BeWell Vitality points.

Baylor board member to participate in 3,500 mile cross-country bike ride

This summer, Baylor College of Medicine Board of Trustees member David Baldwin is participating in Pursuit: The Ride, a 3,500 mile bike ride and capital campaign for The Center, Houston’s largest not-for-profit servicing adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The group will ride across the United States to raise awareness for all families and individuals with disabilities.

 

The Center has created Mission Control, a room on the campus which allows individuals to join the Pursuit ride virtually. Mission Control is stocked with eight stationary bikes and direct video of the team crossing the country, and members of the Baylor College of Medicine family are invited to feel a part of the ride with a donation of $10/mile. The ride goes from June 6 to Aug. 3. Sign up for Mission Control, download the free Mindbody app and search for Pursuit.

BCM BeWell 2016 results session presentation video and quiz

If you were not able to attend the 2016 BCM BeWell Results Session Presentation on June 21 or 22, you still have a chance to watch the video on the BCM BeWell educational seminars page.


It is important to complete your yearly preventative physical, but what do you do once you receive the results? Jesse Gavin, BCM BeWell wellness coordinator, reviews the importance of getting your yearly biometric screening and quick tips to incorporate into your daily routine. Receive 100 BCM BeWell Vitality Points for completing the quiz and answering at least 80 percent of the questions correctly.
