Kauth to receive 2018 GLMA Achievement Award

Dr. Michael Kauth, professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, will receive the 2018 Gay and Lesbian Medical Association Achievement Award. GLMA's Achievement Awards recognize outstanding contributions to the LGBTQ community through commitment to improving the quality of health services for LGBTQ people, improving the environment for LGBTQ healthcare workers or for contributing significantly to gains made by the LGBTQ civil rights movement. He will receive the award at the GLMA annual conference in October.

Klotman honored by Latino Learning Center

Baylor President, CEO and Executive Dean Dr. Paul Klotman received the Latino Learning Center's Humanitarian Award in the area of Philanthropy in the Health Professions in recognition of the College's community outreach efforts, including the response to Hurricane Harvey. He and other award recipients were honored at the organization's annual awards luncheon, held yesterday in downtown Houston. The center celebrates its 40th anniversary of serving as one of the principal Latino nonprofit organizations in the Greater Houston area providing educational services to the community.

Breast Cancer Conversations launches July 19

Baylor has launched Breast Cancer Conversations, a quarterly educational event designed to inform the public about what's new in breast cancer research and patient care. Dr. Matthew Ellis, medical oncologist, director of the Lester and Sue Breast Center at Baylor's Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center and a McNair Scholar, will open the series with a discussion on breakthrough breast cancer treatments, including alternatives to chemotherapy, on July 19 at 6 p.m. at the Baylor College of Medicine Medical Center on the McNair campus, in the first floor conference room area. The event is free, but please register online.

Register now: Liver disease conference

The 19th annual Hot Topics in Liver Disease Conference will be held July 28, offering healthcare professionals the latest information on cirrhosis and its clinical complications, non-alcoholic and alcoholic liver diseases and drug-induced liver injury, viral hepatitis, hepatobiliary malignancy and liver transplantation. CME hours will be offered. Course directors from Baylor are Dr. Norman Sussman, associate professor of surgery, and Dr. John Vierling, professor of medicine and surgery. Register online.

CNRC newsletter available online

Read about the latest research going on at the USDA/ARS Children's Nutrition Research Center at Baylor and Texas Children's Hospital in the Center's publication, Nutrition and Your Child. Stories in this issue include the association between sleep and weight in preschoolers, the effectiveness of mentors in school-based obesity intervention programs and more.

Volunteer opportunities

-Study on fathering behaviors: Fathers with children ages 5 to 11 years are needed to answer a 30-minute online survey about what they do with their children to promote physical activity and eating behaviors. -Alzheimer's study: Volunteers are needed for a clinical research study on an investigational medicine to see if it may reduce symptoms of agitation in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Study participants must be between 50 to 90 years old, have moderate to severe agitation due to Alzheimer's and have a caregiver able to attend all study visits.
