Award and Recognitions

Chen earns Chan Zuckerberg grant

Dr. Rui ChenDr. Rui Chen, professor of molecular and human genetics, and his team of researchers have been awarded a grant by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to establish a cell reference-atlas of the human neural retina, build a high-resolution spatial map for all cell types in the retina and develop single cell classification and integrative analysis software tools. They are among 39 collaborative science teams that will be a part of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Seed Networks for Human Cell Atlas projects, an international effort to map all cells in the human body.

Mullen to lead O&P Program

Ashley MullenAshley Mullen, assistant professor in the School of Health Professions, has been appointed director of the Orthotics and Prosthetics Program, effective July 1. She has served as the program's associate director for almost three years. Jared Howell, assistant professor and founding director of the O&P Program, is taking on new responsibilities in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, where he will develop strategies and a clinical care model for patients needing orthotics and prosthetics.

Viswanathan receives NIH grant

Dr. Ashwin ViswanathanDr. Ashwin Viswanathan, associate professor of neurosurgery, was awarded a Research Project Grant (R01) of more than $2 million by the National Institutes of Health for his research on the efficacy of cordotomy, a highly specialized surgical procedure for the treatment of advanced cancer pain. It also will build on his work funded by the American Cancer Society to study surgical pain interventions.

July 4-5 schedule

The College will be closed on Thursday, July 4, and will reopen Friday, July 5. Morrison Café and the Coffee Corner at main Baylor and Mary O's at the Jamail Specialty Center will be closed July 4-5, and other food service in the Texas Medical Center may be limited. In addition, NewsLink will not be published next Friday, July 5. It will resume on Friday, July 12. Happy Independence Day to all!

July 7: Deadline extended for quality improvement course

The application deadline has been extended to July 7 for the 2019 QI Jumpstart Training Course. This free course offers healthcare providers hands-on training in the areas of patient safety and quality improvement. Learn more and apply.

Take action against measles health crisis

Measles is an emerging health crisis in the U.S. and elsewhere due to the decline in vaccine coverage, but we can all take steps to combat this epidemic. Baylor College of Medicine offers up-to-date information about the safety of vaccines and makes recommendations for action through an official position paper, FAQ and companion video. Find these resources online, and start educating patients, family and friends!

Otolaryngology clinics moving to Jamail

All otolaryngology clinical operations will consolidate into one location in the Jamail Specialty Care Center, fifth floor, suites E5.100 and E5.200. Clinics will move from Smith Tower, 17th floor, Baylor College of Medicine Medical Center on the McNair Campus, 9th floor, and the sixth floor of Jamail to E5.200. The Audiology Clinic and the Balance Center will remain in E5.100. Clinics will open for patients in this new consolidated location on July 1 at 1:30 p.m. Patient appointments can be made by calling 713-798-5900. Referring physicians should use referral codes REF23 – AMB REF to ENT.

Weigh in on BCM central services

Today is the last day to complete the 2019 Information Technology, Facilities and Food Services Survey. All faculty, staff and trainees may complete this survey online. Responses to the previous central services survey led to several initiatives, including adding space for meeting, studying and relaxing at main Baylor, launching the IT Service Portal, updating food options and making calorie information available.

As Pride Month comes to a close, members of the Baylor family talk about how the College supports the LGBTQ+ community - see more in this video. Some members of the Baylor community also attended the Houston Pride Festival where they provided information about Baylor's programs and services, pictured below.
