Kirk honored for career excellence

Susan KirkSusan Kirk, a physician assistant at Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Centers, has received the 2016 Dr. Marilyn Hockenberry Award for Excellence in Clinical Practice, Education and Research. The award recognizes significant contributions to the educational objectives or clinical practice improvements of the Texas Children's Cancer Center and Hematology Service by advanced-practice nurses and physician assistants. Kirk was honored as an outstanding resource to faculty and staff in her area of expertise, for her involvement in several professional organizations and for exceptional patient care.

Ben Taub Hospital award for cardiac care

For the second year in a row, Harris Health System's Ben Taub Hospital has received the Mission: Lifeline Gold Plus Receiving Center award from the American Heart Association for its care of severe heart attack patients. The award recognizes the hospital for its success and prompt care of ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) cases – heart attacks caused by a blood flow blockage to the heart muscle. To earn the award, the hospital had to achieve a composite score of at least 85 percent among a number of stringent procedures and protocols, including timely admission of STEMI patients and administering life-saving medications and treatments. Dr. Nasser Lakkis, professor of medicine at Baylor, is chief of cardiology at Ben Taub. Seminar in Spanish for children with disabilities June 25

Baylor, Texas Children's Hospital and the Arc of Greater Houston are sponsoring the fifth annual seminar for Spanish-speaking families of children with special needs on June 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Metropolitan Multi-Services Center, 1475 W. Gray, Houston 77019. The seminar, "Children with Developmental Disabilities: Answers to the Top 5 Questions," will provide information on health, genetics, education and community resources. DocTalk on June 29 on neck pain

The next DocTalk is Wednesday, June 29, at noon at the McNair campus, conference room A and B, with Dr. Alexander Ropper, assistant professor of neurosurgery, on neck pain. DocTalk is a series of informal lunchtime talks on a variety of health topics with Baylor doctors, followed by a question-and-answer session. Eligible employees who attend can earn BCM BeWell Vitality points.

Cancer Moonshot Summit

On June 29, Vice President Joe Biden is holding a National Cancer Moonshot Summit, marking the first time that individuals and organizations representing the entire cancer community will come together under the national charge to double the rate of progress towards a cure. The Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center is sponsoring a presentation of the Vice President’s address from Washington, D.C., and will facilitate further discussions and feedback. Please join us for the Cancer Moonshot Summit on Wednesday, June 29, from 3 to 5 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium on the main Baylor campus. Vice President Biden's talk also will be available through a live stream on the National Cancer Moonshot website.

Abstract invitation: BCM Annual Showcase of Educational Scholarship

Abstracts are being accepted for poster presentations at the BCM Academy of Distinguished Educators Showcase of Educational Scholarship. The Showcase is Baylor's premier venue for highlighting scholarship within medical education using a peer-reviewed format, offering the opportunity for conversation and collaboration with colleagues. Poster presentations are judged by an award panel and select posters will receive an Educational Scholarship Recognition Award certificate. The Showcase will be held Friday, Sept. 30, and the abstract deadline is Monday, Aug. 1, at 5 p.m. Find guidelines online.

Learn about scientific communications services

BioScience Writers invites Baylor faculty, postdocs and graduate students to visit its on-site office to learn more about their editing, writing, grant consultation and other scientific communications services. Office hours are Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in room 100.152 on the first floor of the Jewish Institute for Medical Research inside the Dan L Duncan Institute of Clinical and Translational Research. Share resources with medical students

A new initiative organized by Baylor medical students called Short Coat Stories seeks to re-emphasize the importance of the human experience of medicine. To this end, Baylor faculty and students are asked to recommend books they feel would benefit undergraduate medical students. If there is any book that has influenced you in your practice of medicine or medical education, whether it is directly related to medical practice or not, please share that using the following links:

Grant funding available for transition medicine projects

The Ligums Family Transition Medicine Grant will be available again this year to support projects focusing on late adolescents and young adults who have chronic conditions originating in childhood and who are transitioning from pediatric to adult care. The purpose of this funding is to support quality improvement in the transition experience of this patient population, with the ability to partner with community leaders or interest groups. A letter of intent to apply for the grant is due by June 30. If you have any questions about this new funding opportunity, please email Caitlyn.Barrow@bcm.edu.

BCM BeWell biometric screening offsite appointments

BCM BeWell has concluded the spring onsite biometric screenings. You can still submit your physician's results to the wellness portal or obtain an offsite screening. Participants who complete a BCM BeWell biometric screening and their 2016 Vitality Health Review by Nov. 25 will automatically receive 3,500 BCM BeWell Vitality Points the month after successful completion.
