Award and Recognitions

Baldwin to chair Board of Trustees

David BaldwinDavid Baldwin, co-president of SCF partners, has been elected chair of the Baylor College of Medicine Board of Trustees. A member of the Board since 2011, he most recently served as vice chair. Baldwin succeeds Fred Lummis, chair of Platform Partners, LLC, who will continue to serve as a trustee. Richard Mithoff, founder of the Mithoff Law Firm, Ira Mitzner, president and CEO of RIDA Development Corporation, Paul Foster, chair of Western Refining, and Todd Reppert, founder and chair of Reppert Capital Partners, are new additions to the Board.

Biscone honored as nurse midwife

Dr. Erin BisconeErin Biscone, certified nurse midwife in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, was honored by the American College of Nurse Midwives at its annual meeting in Washington, D.C., in May. She received the 2019 Public Policy Award for her advocacy on behalf of certified nurse midwives in Texas. She also was inducted into the Fellowship of the ACNM in recognition of her contributions to midwifery in the U.S. and her leadership at the College.

June 22: Houston Pride Festival

Support our LGBT + community at the 2019 Houston Pride Festival tomorrow, June 22, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Baylor booth will be located near the intersection of Bagby and McKinney. Come say hi!

Employee fairs on SuccessFactors

Employee fairs to introduce SuccessFactors, the new application for human resources management, will continue next week. The fairs will include educational materials and demonstrations, IT assistance with multi-factor authorization, ice cream and giveaways. Next week's dates and locations include:
-June 25, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.: McNair Campus hospital building, first floor conference rooms
-June 26, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., Kirby Clinic, conference room

June 25: DocTalk on IBS

Join the next DocTalk, Tuesday, June 25, at noon in Kleberg Auditorium, where Dr. Atif Iqbal, chief of colorectal surgery, will discuss surgical interventions for inflammatory bowel disease. DocTalk is a series of informal lunchtime talks with Baylor experts on a variety of health topics. Eligible employees can earn BCM BeWell points.

June 25: QI coach info session

Faculty interested in becoming a quality improvement and patient safety coach are invited to an information session Tuesday, June 25, 4 – 5 p.m. at the DeBakey Library and Museum at main Baylor. The session will offer an introduction to the Institute for Continuing Professional Development in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety, the role of a quality coach and the application process. Light refreshments offered. Learn more online and apply to become a coach by July 14.


College News

Health Professions news

The School of Health Professions welcomed two new classes of students on June 17, including 40 students in the Physician Assistant Program and 24 students in the Orthotics and Prosthetics Program. Welcome to all our new health professions students! In addition, O&P Class of 2020 students received their white coats at a June 14 campus ceremony. These students have completed their didactic training and will now transition to clinical training. The Class of 2020 is pictured in their new coats below, and see more photos online.

Funding available for precision environmental health research

Submissions are being accepted for pilot funding through the Gulf Coast Center for Precision Environmental Health for research at the intersection of genetics/epigenetics, environmental health and data science to understand individual and place-based determinants of disease risk. The Center is a joint initiative of Baylor, the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and UT Health. Find more information online.

BeWell news: Welcome spouses/domestic partners!

If your spouse/domestic partner is enrolled in one of the BCM Medical Plans, he or she can now participate in BCM BeWell and access the Vitality wellness portal. Together, you can earn an insurance premium reduction in 2020. Make sure your spouse/domestic partner adds contact information to stay up to date and follows the spouses' Facebook group.
