Bellen elected to European life scientists' group

Dr. Hugo Bellen, professor of molecular and human genetics, has been elected as an associate member of the European Molecular Biology Organization, or EMBO. He joins a community of more than 1,800 leading life scientists. New members will be formally welcomed at the annual EMBO Members' Meeting in October.

Iacobas to serve on vascular anomalies committee

Dr. Ionela Iacobas, assistant professor of pediatric hematology oncology and medical director of the Texas Children's Hospital Vascular Anomalies Center, was invited to join the Scientific Committee of the International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies. The committee, which consists of 10 international experts in the field, drives the organization's scientific initiatives and oversees the scientific program at ISSVA's World Congress.

Shah named board chair of recovery center

Dr. Asim Shah, executive vice chair of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Baylor and chief of psychiatry at Ben Taub Hospital, was appointed as board chair to the Houston Recovery Center. His term, which expires in September 2024, was confirmed at the June 2 City of Houston City Council Meeting.

Internal Med Jeopardy Team success!

The BCM Internal Medicine Residency Jeopardy Team advanced to the final round of the American College of Physicians Doctor's Dilemma Competition in May. The team placed fifth internationally. Congratulations to Nathan Spezia-Lindner, Firas Bahdi and Christian Inchaustegui (captain)!

BCM students named Schweitzer fellows

Baylor medical students Brenna Briles, Shangyi Fu, Nat Moss, Muktha Nair, Ariana Olvera, Matthew Usevitch and Maria Vigil-Mallette have been selected as Albert Schweitzer Fellows from the Houston-Galveston area for 2021-22. Schweitzer fellows design and implement yearlong community projects that address unmet health needs in underserved populations. Learn more about the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship.

HR event: MoneyTalk on real estate

Join MoneyTalk, an HR-Benefits financial wellness virtual presentation, on Wednesday, June 23, at noon, for "Introductions to Real Estate," led by experts from the Foundation for Financial Education. Volunteer at Houston Food Bank June 29

BCM will host a volunteer opportunity at the Houston Food Bank – Portwall Warehouse location on Tuesday, June 29. Two shifts are available: 8 a.m. – noon and 1:30 – 4 p.m. This is open to all faculty, staff, students and trainees. Fill out this form to participate. Registration open: Clinical investigation courses

Registration is open through July 16 for the Fundamentals of Clinical Investigation (Aug. 2-19) and Responsible Conflict of Interest for Clinical Investigators (Aug. 23-26) courses offered by the Clinical Scientist Training Program. Prepare for storm season

Now that hurricane season is here, make sure you have enrolled in Baylor's Emergency Notification System and that your contact information is current. Through the ENS, you'll receive important College updates by text, phone and/or email. If a storm is approaching, you can find updates, information and resources on the Weather Safety webpage. Space City Weather is another source with information on hurricane tracking that is specific to this area.

Male surgeons needed for fertility and fatherhood study

Researchers in the Scott Department of Urology are studying patterns and opinions about fatherhood among male surgeons through an upcoming study. Call for Nominations

• Nominate an outstanding BCM Physician Assistant Program alumnus or BCM Physician Assistant for the Carl E. Fasser Visionary Leadership Award. This award recognizes those PA professionals who demonstrate leadership in research, education, clinical practice, administrative and/or service. This award was established in honor of Carl Fasser for his sustained demonstration of visionary leadership toward the physician assistant profession. The deadline for nominations is July 30, for more information click here.
• Nominations are open for the Baruch Brody Award & Lecture in Bioethics, presented by Baylor's Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy, Houston Methodist and the Rice University Department of Philosophy. The award and lecture recognize junior and mid-level scholars (last terminal degree within 15 years) who have made important theoretical contributions to the field of bioethics. IT News: Unsanctioned apps to be blocked in Teams

Beginning Thursday, July 1, third-party applications (apps) in Microsoft Teams that do not have the necessary contractual agreements and/or Business Associate Agreements (BAAs) in place will be blocked by default. Third-party apps constitute those applications that are developed by vendors other than Microsoft, such as Box, Adobe Sign, Smartsheets, etc. Learn more.

Student fun!

Current first-year medical students were treated to a little fun this week, including an ice cream social and a wellness-focused event, as they complete their initial year of medical education. The event, part of the School of Medicine Learning Community program, included kickball in the courtyard, yoga and a walk at a park, and indoor games. These events marked the students' largest gathering as a class during the pandemic.
