Award and Recognitions

Bier earns volunteer award

Dr. Dennis BierDr. Dennis Bier, director of the USDA/ARS Children's Nutrition Research Center at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital, received the Volunteer of the Year Award from the American Society for Nutrition. Bier and other awardees will be honored at the society’s flagship meeting, Nutrition 2019, June 8 – 11, in Baltimore.

Jarjour elected to neurologic board

Dr. Imad JarjourDr. Imad Jarjour, associate professor of neurology and pediatrics, was elected last month to the board of directors of the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties. On the board, he represents the subspecialty of Autonomic Disorders.

Zoghbi honored with APS award

Dr. Huda ZoghbiDr. Huda Zoghbi, professor of pediatrics, neurology, neuroscience and molecular and human genetics at Baylor and director of the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute at Texas Children's Hospital, received the 2019 Norman J. Siegel New Member Outstanding Science Award of the American Pediatrics Society for her contributions to the advancement of pediatric science. She was honored during the APS Presidential Plenary and Awards Session at the Pediatric Societies Academic Meeting in Baltimore in April. In addition, Baylor faculty members were inducted into the society, including Dr. Carla Davis, Dr. Heidi Schwarzwald, Dr. Jesus Vallejo and Dr. Kristy Murray.

Zika video wins creative honors

"Learning from Zika: Preparing for the Next Outbreak," a documentary film that follows researchers involved in an NIH Zika study, including principal investigator Dr. Flor Muñoz of Baylor, has earned two 2019 Gold Hermes Creative Awards in the Documentary and Medical categories. The Hermes awards are part of an international competition for creative and communications professionals. The film was produced by Linus, a healthcare and life sciences marketing agency. BCM BeWell events

- Lifestyle medicine presentation, June 11, noon in Cullen Auditorium: a panel discussion on lifestyle medicine, defined as the use of evidence-based lifestyle therapeutic approaches, including physical activity, adequate sleep and stress management to treat, reverse or prevent chronic disease. BCM BeWell Vitality points available.
- Wear blue for men's health, June 14: to raise awareness about the importance of men engaging in regular check-ups, including cancer screenings, in recognition of Men's Health Month. Benefits-eligible employees can earn 400 BCM BeWell Vitality points for completing health screenings, including a colorectal screening.

Mosaic Update: Employee fairs

Get ready for the launch this August of SuccessFactors by attending employee fairs being held across campus. SuccessFactors is the new application for human resources management and part of the broader Mosaic Project. The fairs will include educational materials, IT assistance with Multi-factor Authorization, ice cream and giveaways.

Body of Work podcast premieres!

Body of Work is a new podcast from Baylor College of Medicine that explores health topics in the news and important issues in science with our own experts. Tune in to the inaugural episode as Dr. Amy McGuire explains the realities of at-home genetic testing, and be sure to subscribe to Body of Work to stay up to date on future episodes!

Support diversity and inclusion at BCM

Staff and faculty positions are open on the College's Inclusion and Excellence Council. This group provides a forum for engaging trainees, faculty and staff and supporting the diversity and inclusion goals of the College. The council meets quarterly and subcommittee meetings are held monthly. Learn more about the council and apply online by June 21.

Call for Nominations: Carl E. Fasser Visionary Leadership Award

Nominations are open for the Carl E. Fasser Visionary Leadership Award, given annually to a Baylor College of Medicine physician assistant or program alumnus who demonstrates exceptional leadership and named in honor of Carl Fasser, longtime director of Baylor's Physician Assistant Program. The recipient will be announced in October and honored at the School of Health Professions graduation luncheon in December. Submit nominations online by July 31.
