Coselli delivers Presidential Address at thoracic surgery meeting

Dr. Joseph CoselliDr. Joseph Coselli delivered the Presidential Address on “Competition: Perspiration to Inspiration” at the American Association for Thoracic Surgery’s 96th annual meeting in Baltimore. Coselli, professor of surgery and chair of the division of cardiothoracic surgery, chaired the annual meeting, which focused on delivering cutting-edge education to improve cardiothoracic surgical practice. Frazier honored for career achievements

Dr. Bud FrazierDr. O. Howard “Bud” Frazier, professor of surgery in the division of cardiothoracic transplantation and circulatory support, was honored for his career achievements at the Celebration of Mechanical Circulatory Support at the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation meeting in Washington, D.C., in April. He also was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award in Life Sciences from the Houston Technology Center in May. HTC advances the commercialization of emerging technology companies in the Houston area.

Ghebre elected to Fellowship of the American Heart Association

Dr. Yohannes GhebreDr. Yohannes Ghebre, assistant professor and director of radiation biology research and education programs, was elected to be a fellow of the American Heart Association at the Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology/Peripheral Vascular Disease 2016 Scientific Sessions held May 5-7 in Nashville. The title of Fellow is bestowed to individuals on the basis of their scientific and professional accomplishments as well as service to the American Heart Association.

Jones earns Tulane alumni award

Dr. James Jones, a visiting professor in the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy, received the Tulane Medical Alumni Association Outstanding Alumnus Award from Tulane University. The award is given once a year to an alumnus who graduated more than 10 years ago in recognition of contributions to the field of medicine and leadership in the community. Jones also served in Baylor’s department of surgery until 1998.

Willis receives education grant from radiology foundation

Dr. Marc WillisDr. Marc Willis, associate professor of radiology, received a $150,000 2016 Education Scholar Grant from the Radiology Society of North America Research and Education Foundation for his project, “Technology Enhanced Learning: Medical Student Education Simulation Utilizing Clinical Decision Support (Teaching Medical Students to Select the ‘Right Test’ at the ‘Right Time’ for the ‘Right Reason’).” The research team from Baylor also includes Dr. Karla Sepulveda, assistant professor of radiology, and Alana Newell of the Center for Educational Outreach.

Controlled substance disposal event

The Office of Environmental Safety will host a Drug Enforcement Agency controlled substances collection/disposal event Tuesday, June 7, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the ABBR first floor hallway from the Jewish/Jones Building. The event is free of charge to Baylor DEA registrants. Find more information about how you can participate in this event and answers to frequently asked questions.

Evenings with Genetics June 7 on neurofibromatosis

Evenings with Genetics will be held Tuesday, June 7, at the Children’s Museum of Houston on Neurofibromatosis Type 1: Updates in Lifelong Care and Screening, presented by Dr. Michael Wangler, assistant professor of molecular and human genetics, Dr. Surya Rednam, assistant professor of pediatrics – oncology, and Dr. Jennifer Posey, clinical instructor in molecular and human genetics. Light refreshments will be served at 6:30 p.m. and the program starts at 7 p.m. The event is free but registration is required by calling 832-822-4280.

Health Policy Symposium June 11

The department of medicine – section of emergency medicine Health Policy Symposium is June 11 at the Baylor College of Medicine Medical Center on the McNair Campus. The symposium is for clinicians and healthcare professionals interested in exploring the major themes that will emerge in health policy throughout the year. Topics include value in healthcare, health information technology, gun violence, insurance choices, the Affordable Care Act and the viewpoints of the presidential candidates on healthcare. Medical school admissions subcommittee position: Call for nominations

The Office of Medical School Admissions is seeking Baylor faculty, fellow and resident nominations for a membership position on the College’s admissions interviewing subcommittee starting July 1. The subcommittee is charged with interviewing and evaluating applicants who have varied backgrounds, beliefs, interests, experiences and cultural viewpoints in order to ensure a diverse student body. For the 2016 admissions cycle, subcommittee members interviewed 847 medical school applicants! If you are interested in being a member of this subcommittee or would like to nominate someone for the upcoming 2017 admissions cycle, complete the nomination form by June 10.

Vote now for Faculty Senate representatives

The Faculty Senate At Large Elections are now open. All full- and part-time faculty are eligible to vote for up to 12 at-large representatives. Look for your facultysenate@bcm.edu email with a link to the SharePoint ballot and cast your vote by Wednesday, June 8. Candidate information can be found on the elections webpage and in a document linked to the ballot. Results will be announced at the Faculty Senate Meeting scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 9, in Room M112.

Weight Watchers webinar

BCM BeWell invites you to join a Weight Watchers webinar on Thursday, June 9, from noon to 1 p.m., where a program representative will introduce the Beyond the Scale program. The webinar will cover new aspects of the program including food, fitness and fulfillment and offers an opportunity to ask questions. Following the Weight Watchers presentation, a representative from a TMC/UT Health study on the effectiveness of weight loss programs in Houston workplaces will make a presentation.
