BIPAI recognized for impact in Africa

The Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative, BIPAI, was honored at the annual SeriousFun Children's Network gala in New York City last week in recognition of BIPAI's far-reaching impact and in celebration of the continued BIPAI-SeriousFun commitment to providing life-changing camp experiences and medical and psychosocial support to children living with HIV/AIDS in Africa. Founded by the late actor Paul Newman, SeriousFun is an organization that provides free camps and other resources to children with serious medical conditions.

Garber earns Master of Endocrinology Award

Dr. Alan GarberDr. Alan J. Garber, professor of medicine, biochemistry and molecular biology, and molecular and cellular biology, was awarded the Master of the American College of Endocrinology award by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists at its annual meeting in Boston last week. The award is given to an AACE member who has received the Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology distinction and is recognized as a distinguished endocrinologist, a role model for trainees and a contributor to the science of the field.

Quinonez awarded for excellence in hospital medicine

Dr. Ricardo QuinonezDr. Ricardo Quinonez, associate professor of pediatrics and Texas Children's Hospital service chief of pediatric hospital medicine, has been selected as a 2018 Pediatric Hospital Medicine Excellence in Clinical Care Award winner in recognition of outstanding leadership and contributions to the advancement of care of hospitalized children. He will receive the award at the Pediatric Hospital Medicine Conference, co-sponsored by the Academic Pediatric Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Society of Hospital Medicine, to be held in Atlanta in July.

Rabin to participate in Congressional briefing

Dr. Karen RabinDr. Karen Rabin, associate professor of pediatrics – oncology at Baylor and Texas Children’s Cancer Center, has been invited to be a member of an expert panel at the Congressional briefing on cancer, leukemia and Down syndrome. Rabin will join other experts for the Capitol Hill briefing in June to update members of Congress about research investigating the interplay between leukemia and Down syndrome.

May 26: Addressing human trafficking through healthcare

SUSTAIN, a half-day training on understanding human trafficking and how to address this issue in the healthcare setting, will be held Saturday, May 26, in room M112 in the main Baylor building, targeting physicians, nurses, social workers and other healthcare professionals and trainees across specialties. The course is sponsored by Baylor's chapter of the American Medical Women's Association in collaboration with trainee and student interest groups. CME credit available; registration is free, and breakfast and lunch will be provided. Learn more and register.

May 29: Commencement

Baylor College of Medicine's commencement is Tuesday, May 29, at 6:30 p.m. at Jesse H. Jones Hall downtown. Congratulations to the 187 graduates from the School of Medicine and 77 graduates from the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, as well as to honorary degree and award recipients J.J. Watt, Dr. David Persse, Dr. Alice McPherson, Dr. Hugo Bellen and Dr. Robert Lefkowitz, the commencement speaker.

June 1: Geomedicine course

Geomedicine: The Fundamentals of Health and Place, a course providing a comprehensive introduction to geomedicine and the use of geographic information systems, or GIS, applications in the healthcare field, is Friday, June 1, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., room M321 at main Baylor. It is designed for healthcare professionals with primary roles in clinical care and research with little or no previous training in this area and co-sponsored by Baylor's Center for Precision Environmental Health and Environmental Health Services. June 5: Surgery research symposium

The sixth annual Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery Resident Research Day Symposium is June 5-6 at the Texas Heart Institute's Denton A. Cooley Auditorium. The event includes a poster session June 5 from 4 to 6 p.m. and a symposium June 6 from 7 a.m. to noon, including scientific and clinical research presentations and keynote address by Dr. Rachel Kelz, associate professor of surgery, general surgery residency program director at director of the Center for Surgery and Health Economics at the University of Pennsylvania, who will speak on "Defining Metrics for Use in the Assessment of Graduate Medical Education." 5th Annual Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference

The fifth annual Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference was held April 26, with more than 200 attendees who participated in interactive discussions and gave peer-reviewed presentations on quality and safety projects and innovations. Abstract winners were medical students Shreya Goyal and Kevin Shah, "Student-led Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Skills Workshops for Medical Student," and medical student Nathaniel Spezia-Lindner, "Analyzing the Use of Fecal Immunochemical Testing (FIT) in Acute Patient Care in Harris Health Hospitals." Poster winners were Dr. Grace Kim, "Criterion-Based Tailored Approach to Education for Newly Diagnosed Type 1 Diabetes in Pediatrics," and Dr. Eric Rosenfeld, "Use of Standardized Visual Aids Improves Informed Consent for Appendectomy in Children: A Randomized Control Trial." Sign up or update Emergency Notification System

Are you prepared for hurricane season? Baylor has an emergency notification system (ENS) to alert you of a crisis or catastrophic event, but first you have to sign up for it or update your information if anything has changed. Nominations open for student promotion committee

Faculty nominations are open for membership on the M.D. Committee for Student Promotion and Academic Achievement, as well as for second-vice chair of the committee. This peer-review committee is charged with reviewing the academic and professional progress of each medical student at BCM. Nominations are due to Yvette Pinales by June 15. BeWell news: Schedule an offsite Biometric Screening

BCM BeWell onsite biometric screenings, also called a Vitality Check, will end this week; however, employees can complete their Vitality Check by visiting an offsite Quest location or scheduling an appointment with a primary care physician. Find a physician through Baylor and CHI St. Luke's custom network or search a list of Baylor physicians. For scheduling help, email scheduleme@bcm.edu.

Volunteer opportunity: First-time dads needed for research study

New fathers and their babies are needed for a new study on the experience of fathering, specifically to learn about how a dad’s brain responds to seeing his baby’s smile. Enroll now and participate with your baby during the first year of life. Fathers will be compensated $150 for travel and parking and will receive a free CD video of their brain in action.
