Fasipe to serve on sickle cell panel

Dr. Titilope FasipeDr. Titilope Fasipe, assistant professor of pediatrics – hematology and oncology, was selected to serve on the American Society of Hematology Technical Expert Panel for Sickle Cell Quality Measures. She also was elected as vice-chair of the Hemoglobinopathy Special Interest Group for the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.

BCM, Giordano to lead new state AIDS research center

Dr. Thomas GiordanoBCM will serve as the lead site of the new Texas Development Center for AIDS Research (D-CFAR), led by Dr. Thomas Giordano, chief of infectious diseases at BCM. Funded through a grant from the National Institutes of Health, D-CFAR is a collaboration of Baylor, the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (including McGovern Medical School, School of Public Health and Cizik School of Nursing) and the Texas Biomedical Research Institute in San Antonio. It will support prioritize and grow HIV research and support the effort to end the epidemic in the United States. To apply for pilot project grants, email Tx-D-CFAR-Dev-Core@bcm.edu.

Kheradmand earns ATC award

Dr. Farrah KheradmandDr. Farrah Kheradmand, professor of pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine, has received the American Thoracic Society 2021 Recognition Award for Scientific Accomplishments. This award recognizes outstanding scientific contributions in basic or clinical research to enhance the understanding, prevention and treatment of respiratory disease or critical illness.

Jneid earns gifted educator award

Dr. Hani JneidDr. Hani Jneid, associate professor of medicine, received the 2021 Gifted Educator Award from the American College of Cardiology. He was honored during the virtual ACC convocation ceremony at the 70th annual scientific session held May 15 – 17. Recipients are nominated by their peers and then selected by the American College of Cardiology Awards Committee.

Congrats, Faculty Award winners!

The recipients were announced this week of the annual Faculty Awards, including the Barbara and Corbin J. Robertson, Jr. Presidential Award for Excellence in Education, Ben and Margaret Love Foundation Bobby Alford Award for Academic Clinical Professionalism, Norton Rose Fulbright Faculty Excellence Awards, Faculty Awards for Excellence in Patient Care, Clark Faculty Service Award and John P. Stop Asian Hate Rally

Rain or shine, join the TMC-wide Stop Asian Hate Rally, today, noon - 1:30 p.m., on the Baylor College of Medicine Jewish Research Institute lawn (1200 Moursund, Houston, TX 77030) to stand in solidarity with the Asian community that has been facing rising anti-Asian sentiments during the pandemic.   • Health Equity Grand Rounds continues May 25, noon – 1 p.m., with "Talking the Talk: Everyday Equity and the Science of Communication," presented by Dr. Casey Lion of the University of Washington School of Medicine. A moment of silence will be observed during the talk in remembrance of George Floyd. Attend via Zoom (Passcode: 867116).
  • The Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity and inclusion invites interested members of BCM to participate in the AAMC's Women of Color and Intersectionality Webinar Series starting May 26. Must have an AAMC account to register. Learn more.
  • A Compassionate Conversation on "Gender Affirming Language and Allyship: Creating Inclusive Environments in Healthcare," led by Dr. Michael Kauth and medical students Newsha Nikzad and Benjamin Solder, is June 2, 5 – 6 p.m. Register online to join the conversation.

3-Minute Thesis Competition

The BCM community is invited to the virtual 3-Minute Thesis Competition, Wednesday, May 26, at 1 p.m. Twelve BCM graduate school students will participate by conveying their research to a lay audience in under three minutes. Learn about the cutting-edge research by our Ph.D. candidates, and vote for your favorite speaker! Presented by the BCM Career Development Center and Graduate Student Council. Register to attend.

Mental Health 101

Learn about common mental health concerns among children, teens and adults and ways to address them at Mental Health 101, presented by the Department of Family and Community Medicine, Thursday, May 27, 3 – 4 p.m., via Zoom. Register to attend; open to all. Presented through a grant from Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Blood Drive

Get a free COVID-19 antibody test when you donate blood at Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center's drive, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, in the Baylor gym on the 8th floor of Garage 6. Appointments are required.

Admissions interviewers needed

Applications are open for the School of Medicine Admissions Interviewing Subcommittees, charged with interviewing and evaluating applicants with varied backgrounds, values, beliefs, interests, experiences and cultural viewpoints to ensure a diverse student body.
