Awards and Recognitions

King honored for research on infectious diseases

Dr. Katherine KingDr. Katherine King, assistant professor of pediatrics – infectious diseases, received the Society for Pediatric Research New Member Outstanding Research Award at the Pediatric Academic Societies meeting, held May 5-8 in Toronto. She was one of two new members, out of nearly 150, honored for research, which focuses on how inflammation affects blood and immune cell production by hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow, with the long-term goal of reducing deaths from infectious diseases.

Li and Rodney earn UH teaching award

Dr. Na LiDr. George RodneyDr. Na Li, assistant professor of medicine, and Dr. George Rodney, associate professor of molecular physiology and biophysics, received the 2017-2018 University of Houston Teaching Excellence Award for Group Teaching, one of the highest awards bestowed by the university. Along with 12 other faculty members from across the nation, they taught the Cardiovascular and Renal Pharmacology Graduate Course at the University of Houston during the 2017-2018 academic year.

M.D./Ph.D. student Shamim earns fellowship

Muhammad Saad ShamimM.D./Ph.D. student Muhammad Saad Shamim, an immigrant from Pakistan, was selected as a 2018 fellow of the Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans program. Each year, the program invests in the graduate education of 30 new Americans – immigrants and children of immigrants – who are poised to make significant contributions to U.S. society, culture or their academic field. Each fellow receives up to $90,000 in financial support over two years. Read more.

Dr. Cindy Ivanhoe, professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation, will take part in the Speak Out and Take Action event focused on sexual harassment, May 22 at Hotel Sorella. Learn more.

School of Medicine news

-The School of Medicine's critical thinking and problem solving course, developed as part of the curriculum renewal process, was the focus of the AAMC Curriculum Inventory Administrators' Group May webinar, presented by Dr. Nadia Ismail, associate dean of curriculum, and Dr. Sarah Bezek, assistant professor of medicine. -A program focused on resident-patient interaction at Baylor and other institutions was highlighted in the AAMC News. Here, the program is led by Drs. Brett and Reina Styskel. Read more.
-The School of Medicine Office Admissions is seeking nominations of faculty, fellows or residents for its Admissions Interviewing Subcommittee, charged with interviewing and evaluating applicants from varied backgrounds to ensure a diverse medical student body. Call for submissions: Health equity and disparities research

The Office of Institutional Diversity, Inclusion and Equity is seeking poster presentation proposals for its Center of Excellence in Health Equity, Training and Research Summer Research Summit on Tuesday, June 19. Submissions are open to Baylor faculty, staff and trainees and affiliate hospital team members and should highlight innovative research in health equity or health disparities that will contribute to improvements in these areas. Department of Medicine grant news

-The NIH awarded a $3.67 million, 5-year renewal grant to continue and grow the work of the Texas Medical Center Digestive Diseases Center, led by Dr. Hashem El-Serag, professor and chair of medicine, and Dr. Douglas Burrin, professor of pediatrics. Read more.
-Dr. William Mitch, professor of medicine, received an NIH grant for his research on complications that occur in patients experiencing loss of kidney function. His research team, which includes Dr. Liping Zhang, Dr. Sandhya Thomas and others, have identified biochemical signals that may be involved in chronic kidney disease. This research has received longtime support from the NIH, including an NIH Merit Award.
-Dr. Yanlin Wang, associate profess or medicine, received a grant for more than $350,000 from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases for his project "Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms of Renal Fibrosis."
