Friedman named to professionalism board

Dr. Ellen FriedmanDr. Ellen M. Friedman, professor of otolaryngology and director of the Center for Professionalism, recently was elected to the Academy for Professionalism in Health Care Board of Directors as an at-large member. She will serve a two-year term to promote and optimize patient care through professionalism education, scholarship, policy and practice in all health-related fields.

Wulff earns research grant

Dr. Jade WulffDr. Jade Wulff, clinical postdoctoral fellow in pediatric hematology/oncology at Baylor and Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Centers, has received a St. Baldrick Foundation Fellow grant for her project, "Targeting integrin-mediated signaling in metastatic Ewing sarcoma." Fellow grants support early career scientists whose research is focused on new cures and treatments for childhood cancers.

Yeoman presents at Nurses Week event

Dr. Lynn YeomanDr. Lynn Yeoman, Ph.D., professor emeritus in the Department of Pharmacology and Chemical Biology, presented a talk titled "Avoidance of Diethylstilbestrol (DES) and Thalidomide Usage in Pregnant Women" at the ninth annual Nurses Week Commemoration, Historical Perspectives on Reproductive Health, held last week at Texas Woman's University College of Nurses in conjunction with National Nurses Week. The event drew attendees from nurses' organizations at Texas Woman's University, UTHealth, University of St. Thomas, University of Houston, Prairie View A&M and the Houston Area Perinatal Collaborative Program.

May 21: Blood drive

A blood drive for the Baylor St. Luke's Blood Center will be held Tuesday, May 21, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor. Donors will get a T-shirt and snacks. Give the gift of life!

May 22 events

-Baylor apparel sale: May 22, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Rayzor Lounge; all merchandise will be 50 percent off. Shop and enjoy a free cookie!
-DocTalk: Wednesday, May 22, at noon in Cullen Auditorium, with Dr. Bella Schanzer, vice chair for clinical affairs and professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, on mental disorders such as schizophrenia. DocTalk is an informal series of talks with Baylor experts on a variety of health topics. Eligible employees who attend can earn BCM BeWell Vitality points.
-BIPAI benefit: Support the Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative at Texas Children's Hospital, Wednesday, May 22, 5 - 8 p.m., Axelrad Beer Garden, 1517 Alabama St. Shop for crafts and enjoy beverages; proceeds benefit BIPAI camps and adolescent programs.

May 24: Bowling Ball for charity

The annual student-organized Bowling Ball is Friday May 24, 7 – 9 p.m. at the University of Houston, benefiting H.O.M.E.S. Clinic. Open to the Baylor community. Get your teams organized now and sign up online.

May 29: Behavior change webinar

"New Strategies for Enhancing Health Behavior Changes," a video lecture by Dr. Robert Reiher, an expert in developmental and educational psychology, is Wednesday, May 29, 3 - 5:30 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium. Reiher integrates neuroscience, consciousness research and personal development into health behavior programs to maximize positive behavior change. Sponsored by the USDA/ARS Children's Nutrition Research Center. Open to all; refreshments provided.

DeBakey High School among top in U.S.

DeBakey High School for Health Professions was ranked No. 17 in the nation, and No. 3 in Texas, by the U.S. News and World Report's annual list of the nation's top public schools. DeBakey High School is a health professions magnet school of the Houston Independent School District, in partnership with Baylor College of Medicine.
