Flores earns grant for leadership institute

Dr. Ricardo Flores, assistant professor of pediatrics – oncology, was awarded a travel grant to participate in the 2018 Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science - Howard Hughes Medical Institute Advanced Leadership Institute in Washington, D.C., in June. The institute prepares participants for expanded leadership roles in their organizations, with a focus on creating diversity in STEM fields that reflects the demographics of the population.

Shah receives the Children’s Mental Health Champion Award

Dr. Asim Shah, professor and executive vice chair in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, has been honored with the Children's Mental Health Champion Award presented by the Center for School Behavioral Health at Mental Health America of Greater Houston. He is being recognized for his outstanding contributions to children's behavioral health and well-being in the community. He will receive the award at the 2018 Children's Mental Health Art Showcase on Wednesday, May 9, at the Health Museum.

Smith honored through women’s history project

Dr. Peggy Smith, professor of obstetrics and gynecology, was selected as a Texas Medical Center Women's History Project honoree. The joint project with the Greater Houston Women's Chamber of Commerce documents and records the lives of women who have made important contributions to science and healthcare. Smith was recognized for her longtime leadership of the Baylor Teen Health Clinic and efforts to reduce health risks among adolescents in Harris County and beyond.

Whitaker named to conference committee

Latoya Whitaker, registrar, will serve a two-year term on the site-selection committee for the 2020 and 2021 annual conference of the Texas Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers. The organization and its annual conference promote best practices, provide legislative updates and offer information about innovative technology trends in the industry.

Join Team Baylor at the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network's 2018 Walk to End Bladder, Sunday, May 6, at Terry Hershey Park, check-in starting at 8:30 a.m., event at 9:30 a.m.

May 8 events at Baylor College of Medicine

-DocTalk, noon, Kleberg Auditorium, with Dr. Siripoom McKay, assistant professor of pediatrics, on young adults with diabetes. Eligible employees who attend will receive BCM BeWell Vitality points.
-Faculty Senate Lunch & Learn: Finance 101, noon to 1 p.m., Cullen Auditorium, with Dr. Paul Klotman and CFO Julie Nickell, providing an overview of the Baylor budgeting process and a discussion on funding in academic medicine.
-DeBakey Research Awards Ceremony and Symposium, Tuesday, May 8, 2 to 4 p.m., M112, recognizing the significant published work of Drs. Karl-Dimiter Bissig, Atul Chopra, Erez Lieberman Aiden, Meng Wang and Shawn Zhang. Researchers can pick up an "Ask Me About my Research" button at the ceremony, and learn how to start a conversation about their work in this video.

May 9: Wellness Fair

The Office of Student Services and BCM BeWell will host a wellness fair May 9, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., offering health and wellness information and activities, including nutritional cooking demonstrations, mindfulness practices, yoga and more. Prizes and BCM BeWell Vitality points will be awarded to eligible employees who attend. Email wellness@bcm.edu for more information.

May 10: Resiliency focus of two campus talks

Guitarist and storyteller Seamus Kelleher will give two presentations focused on resiliency on May 10, from noon to 1 p.m. and from 4 to 5 p.m., both in Cullen Auditorium. Titled "Shine the Light," the presentation-performances are part of the Pete and Erin Huttlinger Series on Humanism and Medicine and are hosted by the Center for Professionalism in Medicine. They also are part of BCM BeWell's Wellness Week; Vitality points will be awarded to eligible employees who attend. CME credit available.

BCM BeWell news: Maintain Don't Gain Challenge

Eligible employees can register for the BCM BeWell Maintain Don't Gain Challenge that begins May 14. Participants will track weight measurements to maintain current weight or gradually lose weight. Benefits-eligible employees can earn up to 350 BCM BeWell Vitality points. Questions? Email wellness@bcm.edu.

Support Homes for Animal Heroes

The Center for Comparative Medicine is participating in a virtual 5K to support Homes for Animal Heroes, a national program dedicated to rehoming retired research dogs and sharing knowledge about the important role animals play in finding cures for diseases. Join the Baylor team, BCM Beastmode, by donating online and participating virtually.
