Couroucli recognized by thoracic group

Dr. Xanthi CouroucliDr. Xanthi Couroucli, associate professor of pediatrics – neonatology, is being honored with 2019 American Thoracic Society Assembly on Pediatrics Clinician Educator Award in recognition of outstanding and innovative clinical and teaching abilities. She will receive the award at the Assembly on Pediatrics membership meeting, May 19, in Dallas.

El-Serag to lead AGA

Dr. Hashem El-SeragDr. Hashem El-Serag, chair of the Department of Medicine and professor of medicine - gastroenterology, will become the 114th president of the American Gastroenterological Association in May 2019. The association includes more than 16,000 members who are involved in all aspects of the science, practice and advancement of gastroenterology. Smith earns community honor

Dr. Peggy SmithDr. Peggy Smith, director of the Baylor Teen Health Clinic and professor of obstetrics and gynecology, has earned the John R. Boettiger Jr. Award for Community Partnership from the Immunization Partnership. The award recognizes her commitment to keeping Texans healthy and her support of the Immunization Partnership, its programs and mission. She received the award at the 10th annual TIP Community Immunity Spring Luncheon, April 25 at the River Oaks Country Club.

Yustein named to cancer task force

Dr. Jason YusteinDr. Jason Yustein, professor of pediatrics at Baylor and Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Centers, is one of the experts participating in the New Agents for Ewing Sarcoma Task Force recently formed by the Children's Oncology Group Bone Tumor Committee. The mission of the task force is to evaluate and prioritize new agents for incorporation into clinical trials for metastatic and relapsed Ewing sarcoma. A manuscript detailing the work of the Task Force was published this week.

Today: Service Learning symposium

The inaugural Service Learning Program Poster Symposium is today from 2-4 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor. Medical student groups will present the work they performed with local community partners. Refreshments will be served; open to all.

April 27: Liver Walk

Join the Houston Liver Life Walk, April 27 at Memorial Park. Participants can sign up for either a 1k or 5k and enjoy a festival-like atmosphere. The event supports liver disease research and patient care, including efforts at Baylor College of Medicine and its affiliated institutions.

-Mosaic Town Hall, May 7, 4 p.m., Cullen Auditorium, offering an update on the Mosaic Project, including the status of the Concur travel and expense component and the launch of Success Factors, which will roll out new human resources processes.

May 9: The Conversation Series

The next installment of the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy's Conversation series will be led by Dr. Savitri Fedson, associate professor in the Center, with a focus on disorders of consciousness. Learn more about the seminar, happening May 9 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at Damian's Cucina Italiana.


College News

Share health career info with 8th graders!

Healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, medical assistants, social workers and others, are invited to share information about their careers with 8th grade students at the Baylor College of Medicine Academy at Ryan annual Health Career Day, Tuesday, May 21, from noon to 4 p.m. The health science magnet middle school, located in the Third Ward, is one of the BCM-HISD partner schools. Learn more online about this opportunity or for additional information, email Beatriz Perez-Sweeney. Also, check out the Academy at Ryan's entry in this year's Art Car Parade, pictured above. The middle schoolers developed the car's theme on the central nervous system and the senses, designed the art and built the props, with the help of their teachers and Baylor medical students. Way to go!
