Ghebre to serve on NIH Study Section

Dr. Yohannes T. Ghebre, associate professor of radiation biology in the Department of Radiation Oncology, has been invited by NIH's Center for Scientific Review to serve as a member of Lung Injury, Repair and Remodeling Study Section until June 30, 2025. Membership in NIH's Study Section is merit based and provides a unique opportunity to contribute to the national biomedical research effort. Ghebre trained at Stanford University School of Medicine and had been a faculty member at Houston Methodist prior to joining BCM in 2016.

Jankowsky receives Alzheimer's research grant

Dr. Joanna Jankowsky, professor of neuroscience, was awarded a Zenith Fellows research grant from the Alzheimer's Association. One of the most prestigious awards in Alzheimer's research, the Zenith Fellows grants support senior scientists who have contributed significantly to the Alzheimer's disease research field, but need support to advance a new idea.

Miterko earns prestigious graduate study scholarship

Lauren Miterko, a graduate student in the Program of Developmental Biology, has earned a P.E.O Scholarship Award to be used toward her research. The $15,000 award recognizes women in doctoral programs who have demonstrated scholarly excellence and academic achievement and are expected to make significant contributions to the world through their research. Miterko is part of the lab of Dr. Roy Sillitoe where she studies cerebellar ataxia.

April 22: Earth Day at Baylor

Join the fun on April 22 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge as we celebrate Earth Day. Stop by to learn about the College's recycling and sustainability efforts and get information from local vendors. April 25: McLean Lectures in Biochemistry

The 47th Annual Verna and Marrs McLean Lectures in Biochemistry are April 25 in Cullen Auditorium, including a 2 p.m. lecture, "TOR's Translational Branch: A Key Regulator of Cancer Progression and Neuronal Function," by Dr. Nahum Sonenberg, professor in the Department of Chemistry and Rosalind and Morris Goodman Cancer Research Center at McGill University, Canada, followed at 3:35 p.m. by "mTOR Signaling in Growth and Metabolism," by Dr. Michael Hall, Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Basel.

April 25: Career seminar on clinical research/management

The College's Career Development Center, Graduate Student Council and Postdoctoral Association will host a seminar on clinical research and management careers Thursday, April 25, 2 p.m., in room M112 in the DeBakey Building, main Baylor.

April 25: Baylor's annual patient safety conference

Baylor's 6th Annual Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference is Thursday, April 25, in Onstead Auditorium, 6767 Bertner Ave. This year's conference focuses on the value of teamwork to improve healthcare quality and safety; preparation required for careers in healthcare quality and patient safety; and accreditation and educational compliance in healthcare quality and patient safety. Open to healthcare professionals and trainees; CME credit offered. The conference is free but registration is required online by April 21.

April 27: Conference on refugee mental health

The Alliance for Multicultural Community Services and Physicians for Human Rights at Baylor College of Medicine are sponsoring the second annual Refugee Mental Health and Wellness Conference, April 27 at United Way of Greater Houston. This year's keynote speaker is Qusay Hussein, an advocate for refugees and people with disabilities and mental health problems. Special topics of the conference this year will include border health and human trafficking. Register online.

BeWell news: Schedule your biometric screening!

Registration for onsite 2019 BCM BeWell Biometric Screenings is open through May 23. The biometric screening is a valuable health assessment tool for total cholesterol, blood pressure, BMI and more. Benefits-eligible employees who complete a biometric screening along with their 2019 Vitality Health Review by Nov. 26 will receive 1,000 BCM BeWell Vitality Points. The biometric screening can be completed through BCM BeWell or by the participant's primary care physician. Spouses and domestic partners who are enrolled in a Baylor medical plan also are eligible to participate. Learn more about scheduling. Questions? Email wellness@bcm.edu.

First-time dads needed for study

New fathers and their babies are needed for a study on the experience of fathering, to learn about how a dad's brain responds to seeing his baby's smile. Enroll now and participate with your baby during the first year of life. Fathers will be compensated $150 for travel and parking and will receive a free CD video of their brain in action. Call for submissions

-The Center of Excellence in Health Equity, Training and Research, part of the Office of Institutional Diversity, Inclusion and Equity, invites submissions for poster presentation proposals from faculty, staff, trainees and students for its Summer Research Summit June 18. Posters should highlight innovative research in health equity or health disparities that will contribute to minority health and the elimination of health disparities. Email abstracts for consideration, and find more information on the COE website.
-The American Medical Association Journal of Ethics seeks manuscripts exploring the ethical complexities of cancer prevention as a global public health imperative for an upcoming theme issue edited by Dr. Zachery Tabb, a medical resident in pediatrics at Baylor. Find more information online (scroll to the February 2020 issue). The deadline for submissions is May 31.
