Awards and Recognitions

New pediatrics chair named

Dr. Catherine GordonDr. Catherine Gordon has been appointed chair of the Department of Pediatrics and pediatrician-in-chief of Texas Children's Hospital. Currently professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and chief of adolescent medicine at Boston Children's Hospital, she is internationally known for her research on factors that affect bone health in teens and young adults. She joins Baylor and TCH on Oct. 1.

Gou earns AACR award

Xuxu GouXuxu Gou, Ph.D. candidate in translational biology and molecular medicine and part of the Ellis Lab, has received a Scholar-in-Training Award from the American Association for Cancer Research for her project on metastatic breast cancer. The competitive award supports attendance at the AACR virtual annual meeting in April and May.

Harris named top diversity officer

Dr. Toi HarrisDr. Toi Harris, associate provost of institutional diversity and inclusion, is among those being recognized as the 2021 Top 100 Diversity Officers at the 17th Annual National Diversity and Leadership Conference, April 21-22 and April 28-29. With the award, she was invited to nominate five diversity, equity and inclusion champions at Baylor. She has named Dr. Hana El Sahly, Dr. Michael R. Kauth, Dr. Erik D. Malmberg, Dr. Fred A. Pereira and Dr. Laura A. Petersen.

Haq to chair of AAP section

Dr. Heather HaqDr. Heather Haq, assistant professor of pediatrics and chief medical officer for the Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative at Texas Children's Hospital, was re-elected to serve as education chair on the Executive Committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Global Health, 2021-2024.

The St. Baldrick's Foundation-Stand Up 2 Cancer Pediatric Cancer Dream Team has been selected as this year's recipient of the AACR Team Science Award. Dr. Nabil Ahmed, Dr. D. William Parsons, Dr. Meenakshi Hegde, Dr. Sujith Joseph, and Bambi Grilley of Baylor are among those recognized. The award recognizes an outstanding interdisciplinary team of researchers for their innovative cancer research.

 

Dr. Zoann_DreyerDr. ZoAnn Dreyer, professor of pediatrics - hematology and oncology and clinical director of the Texas Children's Cancer Center Long-Term Survivor Program, was recognized by Northwest Mutual as a female hero in the fight against childhood cancer.

Health Equity Grand Rounds, April 20, noon – 1 p.m., with Dr. Ashaunta T. Anderson, assistant professor of pediatrics at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, will focus on "Acing Race: A Strategy for Child Health Equity," join by Zoom (Meeting ID: 93006362884; Passcode: 867116).

Compassionate Conversation: Addressing Asian, Asian American & Pacific Islander Discrimination will be held April 21, 5 – 6:30 p.m., with Dr. Francis Lu, professor emeritus at the University of California, Davis, an expert on cultural competence and diversity. Register online. In addition, show support for the Asian, Asian American and Pacific Islander communities by signing the banner in the E-hallway at main Baylor, by the cafeteria. You also can download a solidarity poster to display in your office or pick one up in the Office of Communications, suite 176B at main Baylor. Fill it in, snap a photo, and email to Katie Holtman to share on Baylor’s social media.

Bioethics Grand Rounds

Join the virtual Bioethics Grand Rounds for "Human Trafficking 101: A Primer," April 21, at 5 p.m., presented by Kimberly Williams, director of the Anti-Human Trafficking Initiative, St. Luke's Health. Attend via zoom.

Bike Social to MacGregor Park

The student wellness program, BCM LIFE, and Houston BCycle invite BCM students, staff, faculty and trainees to a bike ride social on April 22, at 5 p.m. Anyone can join in on a fun, healthy and safe short bike ride to MacGregor Park from main Baylor for a light lunch (will be provided). Register for the event.

HR news: Virtual tutoring

Beginning April 15, you can use your Bright Horizons Back-Up Care benefit to reserve an experienced tutor to help your 5- to 18-year-old child. Copays are waived in April so there's no cost to you.
