El-Serag honored for his contributions to medicine

Dr. Hashem El-Serag, professor of medicine – gastroenterology, has been named the Houston honoree of the Bin Qurrah Award from the National Arab American Medical Association – Houston Chapter. The award, named after a prominent Arab physician-scientist, was founded in 1998 to recognize the many contributions of scientists of Arab origin to the fields of science and medicine. El-Serag will be recognized along with national honoree Dr. Huda Akil at a gala Saturday, May 7.

Orange honored for research by pediatric society

Dr. Jordan Orange, professor of pediatrics and chief of pediatric immunology, allergy and rheumatology, has received the 2016 Norman J. Siegel New Member Outstanding Science Award from the American Pediatric Society. His research focuses on the fundamental cell biology of intercellular immune interactions as well as mechanistic insights gained from pediatric primary immunodeficiency. He will present his research at the APS Presidential Plenary and Awards Session next month.

Rosen elected to dermatology academy leadership position

Dr. Ted Rosen, professor of dermatology at Baylor and chief of the dermatology service at the Micheal E. DeBakey Veteran Affairs Medical Center, was elected vice president of the American Academy of Dermatology. He will be installed as vice president-elect in 2017, and his term will begin in March 2018. The Academy represents more than 18,000 physicians who specialize in dermatology. Rosen also will serve as vice president of the American Academy of Dermatology Association.

Professionalism talk April 20

“How We Choose to Be Happy,” is the focus of professionalism talks Wednesday, April 20, at noon for students (pizza will be served) and at 4 p.m. for faculty, staff and residents (light reception to follow). Both talks are in Kleberg Auditorium. Presenter Greg Hicks, author of a book on the same topic, will introduce a system of behaviors that has been shown to lead to positive health choices, effective stress management and other beneficial outcomes. AAMC’s chief diversity officer to talk at Baylor April 21

Dr. Marc Nivet, chief diversity officer with the Association of American Medical Colleges, will talk on “Diversity and Inclusion in Academic Medicine: From Fairness to Excellence” on Thursday, April 21, from noon to 1 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium on the main Baylor campus, followed by a reception for faculty, staff and trainees in Rayzor Lounge.

Vaccine continuing education course

The National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, together with the National Center for Therapeutics Manufacturing at Texas A&M University, is hosting a one-day continuing education course on quality control in vaccine development. It will be held Wednesday, April 27, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Feigin Center, first floor conference room. Instructors will include Baylor faculty Dr. Maria Elena Bottazzi, Dr. Wen Hsiang Chen and Dr. Jeroen Pollet. Find more information and register online.

Aesthetics Studio open house April 28

The Aesthetics Studio at the Jamail Specialty Care Center is hosting a Bare Minerals and Avène Skincare open house Thursday, April 28, from 3 to 6:30 p.m. Representatives will showcase new products, techniques and tips. Get your colleagues to sign up for BeWell and win prizes!

A review of the aggregate data of wellness participation over the past two years indicates that individuals who participate in the BCM BeWell Wellness Portal are improving their health results over time. The BCM BeWell program would like to encourage more participation by challenging its current participants to spread the message about the award-winning program. Participants who get five eligible individuals to register for the BCM BeWell Wellness Portal and complete their 2016 VHR between April 18 - May 30 will be entered into a drawing for a $100 gift card. Once you have gotten your five individuals, send an email to wellness@bcm.edu with their names and you will be entered in the drawing (one drawing entry for every five individuals). TMC Library survey

The TMC Library is conducting a quick survey to better understand the needs of its clients. Provide your opinions about library services whether you are a frequent library user, an occasional library user or have never used the library before.
