Awards and Recognitions

Davis to serve on allergy board

Dr. Carla DavisDr. Carla Davis, associate professor of pediatrics, chief of the section of immunology, allergy and rheumatology at Texas Children's Hospital and director of the Food Allergy Program, was appointed to the board of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. She will serve as an at-large director from the interest sections.

Mathew elected to anxiety and depression board

Dr. Sanjay MathewDr. Sanjay Mathew, professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and vice chair for research in the department, was elected to the Board of Directors for the Anxiety and Depression Association of America at its annual conference last week in Chicago. He also received a Member of Distinction Award.

Shah earns Harris Health award

Dr. Asim ShahDr. Asim Shah, professor and executive vice chair in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and chief of psychiatry for the Harris Health System and Ben Taub Hospital, was a Think Innovation 2019 Innovation Summit winner from Harris Health. The award honors Shah for his efforts in the area of pediatric tele-psychiatry that improve patient care and processes.

HBJ Healthcare Heroes

Baylor faculty members have been selected to receive 2019 Health Care Heroes Awards from the Houston Business Journal in several categories. They will be honored at ceremony May 23. They include:
Outstanding Health Care Practitioner: Dr. Ricardo Flores, assistant professor of pediatrics – hematology/oncology; Dr. Joohi Jimenez-Shahed, associate professor of neurology; Dr. Julie Kaplow, associate professor of pediatrics – psychology; and Dr. Michele York, associate professor of neurology
Outstanding Physician: Dr. Daniel DeSalvo, assistant professor of pediatrics – diabetes and endocrinology; Dr. Lisa Hollier, professor of obstetrics and gynecology; Dr. Peter Hotez, professor of pediatrics and dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine; Dr. Daniel Musher, Distinguished Service Professor of Medicine – infectious diseases; Dr. Rayne Rouce, assistant professor of pediatrics – hematology/oncology; and Dr. Christina Weng, associate professor of ophthalmology
Rising Star: Dr. Hsiao-Tuan Chao, assistant professor of neurology; and Dr. Arindam Sarkar, resident physician in family and community medicine.


Events

Today: Teaching at the Bedside

A faculty education workshop on teaching at the bedside is being offered today, 3 – 5 p.m., M321 in the DeBakey Building at main Baylor. April 19: Multicultural Festival

The Association for Graduate Student Diversity is hosting the Multicultural Festival, April 19, noon to 2 p.m., in Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor. Student and campus groups will share their culture through food, performances, artwork and more. Open to all!

April 25: Intro to Cognitively-based Compassion Training

Dr. Geshe Lobsang Negi, Emory University professor and doctor of Buddhist philosophy, will deliver an introduction to cognitively based compassion training, Thursday, April 25, 4 p.m., room 201A, main Baylor. The method he developed from ancient Buddhist meditative techniques is now the longest-running and most-studied program designed for cultivation of resilience and compassion. Offered by the Center for Professionalism; open to all.

Baylor hosts meeting of allied health deans

Baylor's School of Health Professions and its dean, Dr. Robert McLaughlin, hosted a meeting of the Southern Association of Allied Health Deans April 3 -5. Members of the association are health professions deans from academic health centers in the South. The meeting included a presentation on the Team Launch program, tours of Baylor, including the orthotics and prosthetics lab, and the Texas Medical Center and roundtable discussions with the deans in attendance.

New leadership added to diversity office

Dr. Rayne RouceDr. Kimberly Kay LopezDr. Antonie RiceThe Office of the Provost and the Office of Institutional Diversity, Inclusion and Equity announced the appointments of three faculty members to new roles this week. Dr. Rayne H. Rouce, assistant professor of pediatrics – hematology/oncology and a faculty senator, and Dr. Kimberly Kay Lopez, assistant professor of pediatrics – public health, were named associate directors of community engagement, while Dr. Antonie Rice, assistant dean of education and student affairs in the National School of Tropical Medicine, was appointed director of diversity, inclusion and equity training.

Research platform to link collaborators

A new resource is available to link members of the Baylor community with research opportunities. Created by Baylor students, ResRadar is a website that serves as a central platform for active research projects, allowing students to easily find research projects to work on, while providing researchers a channel to broadcast their project and identify students to help complete them. This interactive site allows anyone at BCM with a research activity (resident, fellow, graduate student, faculty, etc.) to post a research opportunity.

BeWell news: Cycling class to support Team BCM

Register online to join an indoor cycling class next Thursday, April 18, benefiting Team BCM’s fundraising efforts for the upcoming BP MS 150. The cycling class will be held at 6:30 p.m. at DEFINE: West U, 2518 Bissonnet St. In addition, DEFINE is offering the BCM community a 20 percent discount on ‘Absolute Best’ memberships - bring your Baylor ID to any Houston location to join.
