Chaison earns diversity award

Dr. Angelic Chaison, assistant professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, has received a national Award for Excellence in Diversity Training from the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers, part of the American Psychological Association. The award recognizes her work with the Minority and Diversity Subcommittee of the Psychology Training Program and the Mental Health Care Line at the Michael E. DeBakey Veteran Affairs Medical Center. Chaison is a psychologist in the DeBakey VA’s Primary Care-Mental Health/Behavioral Health Program.

Ng honored for teaching contributions in neurology

Dr. Yu-tze Ng, chief of the section of pediatric neurology, is the recipient of the 2016 A.B. Baker Teacher Recognition Award of the American Academy of Neurology in recognition of contributions to education and to improving neurology now and in the future. He will be recognized at the Academy’s annual meeting this month in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Peacock inducted in to ACC

Dr. William Peacock, professor of medicine – emergency medicine, was inducted as a fellow in to the American College of Cardiology at a ceremony April 4 during the college’s 65th Annual Scientific Sessions in Chicago. Fellowship is the highest level of distinction for ACC members and recognizes professional achievements. Peacock also is a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians.

Sikora elected to NCI task force

Dr. Andrew Sikora, associate professor of otolaryngology, was elected to the Primary Untreated/Locoregionally Advanced (PULA) Disease Task Force of the National Cancer Institute’s Head and Neck Steering Committee. The steering committee and its task forces work to build efficient, cost-effective, science-driven and transparent processes that identify and promote head and neck clinical research. This honor recognizes Sikora’s groundbreaking translational research in tumor immunology and cancer immunotherapy clinical trials.

Upcoming DocTalks

The next DocTalk is Wednesday, April 20, at noon in McNair conference rooms A - B with Dr. John Oldham, interim chair of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, on personality types and disorders. DocTalk with Dr. Shayan Izaddoost, assistant professor of surgery, on reconstructive surgery, is Wednesday, April 27 at noon in Cullen Auditorium. DocTalk is a series of informal, lunchtime talks on various topics with Baylor faculty, followed by a Q&A. Eligible employees will receive Vitality points.

AAMC’s chief diversity officer to talk at Baylor April 21

Dr. Marc Nivet, chief diversity officer with the Association of American Medical Colleges, will deliver a talk titled “Diversity and Inclusion in Academic Medicine: From Fairness to Excellence” on Thursday, April 21, from noon to 1 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium on the main Baylor campus, followed by a reception for faculty, staff and trainees in Rayzor Lounge. Nivet’s daylong visit to Baylor also will include tours of Baylor College of Medicine Academy at Ryan and DeBakey High School for Health Professions, which are STEM-focused schools that are a partnership of Baylor and HISD.

Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference

Baylor’s Annual Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference is Thursday, April 28, from 4 to 8 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium. It will offer discussion and strategies related to patient safety and value in healthcare, and Baylor faculty, fellows, residents and students will present their peer-reviewed work in the area of quality and safety. The conference is free and is open to physicians, residents, health professionals and medical and allied health students from the Houston region. The conference qualifies for 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Register online.

Neurocritical Care Research Conference made possible by Suarez grant

The Fourth Neurocritical Care Research Conference will be held May 13-15 at the TMC Marriott. The symposium will bring together scientists and physicians from diverse fields with a common interest in understanding and advancing outcomes and research in neurocritical care, with the main theme of the conference focusing on subarachnoid hemorrhage, or bleeding in the brain. Funding for this conference has been provided by a grant to Dr. Jose Suarez, professor of neurology, by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and by Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center and the Integra Foundation. Register for Academies Collaborative Conference

Join Baylor, UT Houston and UTMB – Galveston for a one-day conference focused on assessment in education. The 2016 Annual Academies Collaborative Conference is Friday, May 20, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Pavilion for Women at Texas Children’s Hospital. The conference will feature plenary speaker Dr. Jason Frank, a clinician-educator at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, as well as the opportunity to interact with medical educators from across the region and learn about educational innovations. Introducing Farm to Work program

The Texas Department of State Health Services and the Sustainable Food Center are bringing the Farm to Work program to the Texas Medical Center. Through the Farm to Work website, you can learn about local food, download recipes and order a basket of fresh, locally grown produce delivered to the TMC. The pick-up location is at UT Houston’s McGovern Medical School, 6431 Fannin, room 7.024, on Thursdays from 2 to 3 p.m. There is also a community website created and maintained by program coordinator Saultczy Bleu, where customers interact with each other and the farmers.

Submissions being accepted for Medical World Americas

The organizers of Medical World Americas, in partnership with the Texas Medical Center, invite all interested students to submit an original abstract for consideration for the TMC Student Poster Session at the Medical World Americas Conference and Expo. Poster abstracts must be submitted to POSTER@medicalworldamericas.com by Thursday, April 14, and those invited to participate will be notified by Wednesday, April 27.

HR training open

Human Resources is enrolling for Leading Through Influence on Wednesday, April 20, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This one-day course is designed to empower faculty with techniques on hiring, conflict resolution and employee morale. This course will also include Insights Discovery, a four color model designed to understand an individual’s unique working style and gain deeper insight into yourself and your colleagues.
