Goodman received grant for OCD study

Dr. Wayne Goodman, chair and professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, was awarded a grant of more than $181,000 from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, part of the National Institutes of Health, for a project on the treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder. Lewis honored as leader in pediatric ophthalmology

Dr. Richard Lewis, professor of molecular and human genetics, ophthalmology, pediatrics and medicine, was awarded the 2018 Marshall Parks Bronze Medal from the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus at its 44th Annual Meeting in Washington D.C. Lewis is the first non-pediatric ophthalmologist to be honored. He was recognized as the major intellectual force in applying molecular technologies to inherited ocular disorders especially afflicting infants, children and adolescents. He has authored more than 520 publications and holds 10 U.S. patents.

Najafi recognized in Qatar for diabetic foot research

Dr. Bijan Najafi, professor of surgery and director of iCAMP and of clinical research in vascular surgery and endovascular therapy, recently was honored with the prestigious Best Research Project Award from Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, chair of the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, for his diabetic foot research. He also was awarded a grant from Hamad Medical Corporation for his SmartSox technology.

March 30: Women in leadership talk

Women's History Month at Baylor concludes March 30 at noon in Kleberg Auditorium with a talk by Dr. Ruth Simmons, the first African-American president of an Ivy League institution and current president of Prairie View A&M University, and the recognition of Baylor Women of Excellence by College leadership. Dr. Simmons' talk is titled "Share the Vision: Facing the Future Together." The talk is open to all with a free boxed lunch to the first 75 attendees. Can't attend? Listen on Zoom. April 2-3: McNair Symposia

The 7th Annual McNair Symposium is Tuesday, April 3, featuring a keynote lecture by Dr. Jeffrey Bluestone, University of California, San Francisco, on "Developing Treg-based therapeutics to suppress pathogenic autoimmune responses" at 10 a.m. in Cullen Auditorium, main Baylor, with a poster session starting at 9 a.m. The McNair Medical Institute Mini-Symposium on "Challenges and Hope in Finding a Cure for Type 1 Diabetes," is April 2 from 1 to 5 p.m. in room M112, main Baylor.

April 5: Medicine research symposium

Stop by the Department of Medicine 2018 Research Symposium on Thursday, April 5, 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Rayzor Lounge. The symposium highlights research by Baylor interns, residents, fellows, medical students and graduate students in the Department of Medicine or whose mentor holds a medicine appointment.

The Joan and Stanford Alexander Annual Award in Psychiatry will be presented to Dr. Elinore McCance-Katz, assistant secretary of health and human services for mental health and substance use, who will deliver a lecture, "Informing Federal Healthcare Policy: The Role of Psychiatry," at 10:30 a.m. April 18 in Cullen Auditorium. The award and lecture is part of the Opioid and Substance Abuse Symposium, which will include panel discussions and presentation by legislators and leading experts in the field. Girls Elevated, sponsored by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Texas Children’s Hospital, April 7, United Way Community Resource Center, for girls ages 10 to 18 and their parents/caregivers with topics including puberty, healthy relationships, personal safety, drugs and addiction, contraception and more. Physicians: Dispute your CMS payments now

Since 2013, the Physician Payment Sunshine Act has required applicable manufacturers ("Industry") to report certain payments these companies have made to physicians and teaching hospitals. Physicians have from April 1 to May 15, 2018, to review and dispute Industry payments allegedly made to them in 2017. The payments will be published on June 30, 2018. Physicians should review the amounts that have been attributed to them and challenge any that may be misleading or inaccurate. The Office of Compliance has provided a Physician Sunshine Act summary to assist physicians in logging in to their account to validate and, if necessary, dispute inaccurate payment attributions. Physicians also may access the full Open Payments User Guide from the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services.

Congrats to Coselli's Crusaders!

Dr. Joseph Coselli, professor and chief of the division of cardiothoracic surgery, led his enthusiastic Coselli’s Crusaders team in the Marfan Foundation's third Walk for Victory at Houston's Discovery Green on Saturday, March 3. The Crusaders raised more than $14,000, making it the top fundraising team. Money raised helps provide funding for Marfan syndrome research and education, including the foundation's annual conference, which helps affected patients and families connect with each other and with doctors who treat the genetic connective tissue disorder that affects the heart, eyes, bones and spine.
