Devaraj named fellow of chemistry society

Dr. Sridevi DevarajDr. Sridevi Devaraj, professor of pathology & immunology, director of clinical chemistry and point of care at Texas Children's Hospital, was inducted as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, which encourages the growth, application and standards of chemical science. Achieving Fellow status in the chemical profession denotes a high level of accomplishment as a professional chemist and impact in the field of chemical sciences.

Guillory earns AAP award

Dr. Charleta GuilloryDr. Charleta Guillory, associate professor of pediatrics – neonatology, was awarded the President's Cup Award at the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee of Federal Government Affairs Conference in Washington, D.C., last month. The award is one of the most prestigious pediatric awards to be given nationally.

Schwiebert named to animal research council

Dr. Rebecca SchwiebertDr. Rebecca Schwiebert, attending veterinarian in the Center for Comparative Medicine, was named to the AAALAC Council on Accreditation. The council promotes quality and continuing improvement in animal research through peer reviews of animal care and use programs, conferring an accreditation status, educational efforts and communications with stakeholders.

New grant supports narrative medicine

Dr. Ricardo NuilaThe Program of Narrative Medicine, part of the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy, recently received a grant from Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The grant will be administered by a partnership between the Program of Narrative Medicine and the Rice University Humanities Research Center, and will support narrative medicine in the Texas Medical Center. Led by Dr. Ricardo Nuila, the narrative medicine program provides members of the Baylor and TMC communities an opportunity to write about and share impactful experiences.

Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy events

-Health and Science Policy Research Day, April 2, 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Cullen Auditorium. Speakers include Baylor's Dr. Paul Klotman and Dr. Amy McGuire, and Dr. Tim Caulfield from the University of Alberta, who will explore celebrity health advice and trends. A wide range of topics related to science policy will be addressed in presentations and poster sessions.
-The Conversation series, April 11, noon – 1:30 p.m., Third Coast restaurant, with Dr. Trevor Bibler, assistant professor in the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy, on how faith and healing interact in modern American medicine. Learn more and register.

Heart health course at Rice U.

Dr. Hani Jneid, associate professor of medicine, will lead "Heart Health: Prevention, Treatments and Innovations," a continuing studies course at Rice University, April 3 – 24. Jneid will share the latest clinical and research insights and innovations aiming to promote heart health and prevent the onset and recurrence of heart disease. Register online.

April 27: Liver Walk

Join the Houston Liver Life Walk, April 27 at Memorial Park. Participants can sign up for either a 1k or 5k and enjoy a festival-like atmosphere. The event supports liver disease research and patient care, including efforts at Baylor College of Medicine and its affiliated institutions.

Post-Harvey behavioral health services available

Project Reach is a collaboration between Baylor and Harris Health funded by the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund to provide mental health services for members of the Houston community who have been emotionally impacted by Hurricane Harvey or its aftermath. Clinicians can provide cognitive behavioral therapy and psychiatry services to patients of all ages.
