Awards and Recognitions

Hotez receives two awards for career achievements

Dr. Peter Hotez, dean of the Baylor College of Medicine National School of Tropical Medicine, is being honored with the John P. McGovern Award from the Southwest Chapter of the American Medical Writers Association. He will receive the award at a banquet tomorrow, March 25, where he also will deliver a lecture, "Zika and the Neglected Tropical Diseases: Making People Care About 'The Most Important Diseases You Have Never Heard Of.'" The association is recognizing Hotez for his work as a renowned author, physician-scientist and global health advocate. Hotez also recently received the B'nai B'rith International Distinguished Achievement Award, which recognizes the accomplishments of key community and corporate leaders from around the world.

Lacorazza earns NCI grant

Dr. Daniel Lacorazza, associate professor of pathology & immunology, part of the pathology service at Texas Children's Hospital and an associate member of the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center, received a grant of more than $325,000 from the National Cancer Institute for a project to study a novel mechanism of suppression in pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemias. Evenings with Genetics March 28

Evenings with Genetics, on "New Treatment for Spinal Muscular Atrophy," will be held Tuesday, March 28, at the Children's Museum of Houston. Dr. Timothy Lotze, associate professor of pediatrics – neurology, will be joined by a parent advocate for this discussion on Nusinersen, the first drug found to be effective for treatment of the disease and recently approved by the FDA. Registration is required but seminar attendance is free. Light refreshments at 6:30 p.m.; program starts at 7 p.m. Evenings with Genetics is sponsored by the Department of Molecular and Human Genetics at Baylor and Texas Children's Hospital.

Disability access presentations March 29

Two educational sessions on access to healthcare and health science education as a provision of the Americans with Disabilities Act will be held Wednesday, March 29. Sponsored by Student Disability Services and the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion.
- Noon to 1 p.m., Cullen Auditorium, Dr. Judy Kim from Baylor's Transition Medicine Clinic will present information for clinicians and trainees on interacting with individuals with disabilities and considerations to ensure full access to healthcare.
- 4 to 5 p.m., Kleberg Auditorium, Lucia Ostrom, supervising attorney for Disability Rights Texas, with information for faculty, staff and learners regarding the education rights of individuals with disabilities and considerations to ensure equal access to the learning and work environment.

Alumnus to speak on entrepreneurship

The Enventure speaker series presents Dr. James Lu, who will discuss his journey from M.D./Ph.D. at Baylor to co-founder of Helix, a company that brings DNA discovery to individuals, on Thursday, March 30, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at TMCx, 2450 Holcombe Blvd Suite X. The event is free; register online.

Partnership for BCM event April 7 benefiting cancer center

The Partnership for Baylor College of Medicine will host the Café Society Soirée April 7 at 7 p.m. at the Briar Club benefiting the Phase One Clinical Trial Unit at the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer and honoring Dr. C. Medical volunteers needed for Avon Walk

The Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center will once again serve as the medical sponsor for the Avon Walk, set for April 22 – 23, and volunteers are needed! More than 1,000 walkers will complete the two-day, 39-mile event. Medical volunteers, led by Dr. Stacey Walker, assistant professor of surgery, help care for the walkers, including treating blisters, dehydration, sprains and other issues. Shifts are Saturday noon to 5 p.m.; 3 to 8 p.m. and 4 to 9 p.m.; and Sunday, 6 to 8:30 a.m. Find the medical volunteer form online (link) and return to Rosa Contreras. Funds raised during the Avon Walk support breast cancer awareness and education, screening and diagnosis, access to treatment, support services and research.

Baylor medical students are participating in the Global Health Challenge, an essay and video contest that gives the winning team the opportunity to work in Ecuador, Guatemala or the Dominican Republic to help provide high-quality health services to underserved populations. Financial wellness resources and activities

Human Resources invites you to celebrate Financial Literacy Month by taking charge of your financial health! Join the BCM BeWell Financial Wellness Challenge and attend Financial Wellness Workshops in April. During Financial Wellness Week, April 3-7, BCM BeWell Vitality points will be awarded to benefits-eligible employees for attending workshops. April 3 - 28, benefits-eligible employees can earn up to 350 BCM BeWell Vitality points for completing weekly financial wellness exercises in the challenge. Submit proposals for space exploration projects

The newly established Translational Research Institute led by Baylor College of Medicine is seeking proposals for innovations and technologies that will enable and enhance human exploration of deep space. The Institute's goal is to fund innovative approaches that will reduce multiple risks to human health on missions beyond low Earth orbit. Find more information online.
