Elliott to serve in PA leadership role

Elizabeth Elliott, P.A.Elizabeth Elliott, P.A., associate professor in the School of Health Professions, has been named has associate director of the Physician Assistant Program. Elliot is a graduate of the Baylor College of Medicine PA Program and also serves as a faculty senator representing health professions.

Gastroenterologists selected for leadership program

Dr. Ruben HernaezDr. Avinash KetwarooDr. Ruben Hernaez and Dr. Avinash Ketwaroo, both assistant professors of medicine - gastroenterology, were selected to be part of the American Gastroenterological Association's Future Leaders Program, which provides leadership development for early career physicians and scientists who have the potential to make a significant impact on the specialty. The program kicked off earlier this month and will continue through Digestive Disease Week 2020 in Chicago.

Residents honored by ACMG

Dr. Brian ShayotaDr. Kevin GlintonDr. Brian Shayota and Dr. Kevin Glinton, both residents in the medical genetics program at Baylor, were each awarded an American College of Medical Genetics Foundation 2019 Takeda Next Generation Medical Biochemical Subspecialty Fellowship. They will be honored at the upcoming ACMG annual meeting in Seattle. The awards support the advancement of education, research and standards of practice in medical genetics and expand clinical and laboratory expertise in the field.

March 23: Training on caring for asylum seekers

Physicians for Human Rights at Baylor College of Medicine is offering training on caring for asylum seekers, including sessions on human rights and asylum law, physical and psychological evaluations, and affidavit writing. Open to physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, mental health providers, social workers and trainees. Breakfast and lunch provided. Learn more and register online.

March 28: Women of Excellence lecture and awards

The Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Equity will host the Women of Excellence Recognition and Keynote Address, March 28, noon, Cullen Auditorium, where Baylor senior leadership will honor 'Women of Excellence' at Baylor and allies who support them, followed by a talk by Dr. Hannah Valantine, chief officer for scientific workforce diversity at the NIH. Free lunch for the first 100 attendees, provided by the Department of Medicine and Department of Molecular and Human Genetics.

March 28: Team Discovery on 'Toxic Teams'

The next Team Discovery session from Team Launch will focus on "Toxic Teams," March 28, 3:30 – 5 p.m., rooms M321 and M323, led by Dr. Nana Coleman, director of Team Launch. This seminar is open to all faculty, students, postdoctoral trainees and staff. Learn more about Team Launch.

March 29: Bike ride social event

Baylor staff, faculty, students and trainees are invited to join in on a fun and healthy bike ride to Axelrad on Friday, March 29, at 6 p.m. Participants will meet in front of main Baylor and are encouraged to bring their own bike and helmet. March 30: NRI science day

The CURE Day of Science, organized by the nonprofit Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy, will be held March 30, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., at the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute. Epilepsy experts from Baylor and Texas Children's Hospital will present information on the latest in treatment and research in panel and small-group discussions. March 30 – 31: GI and Liver Course

Baylor's 18th annual GI and Liver Course is March 30 – 31 in Onstead Auditorium, 6767 Bertner Ave., offering practicing physicians and other health professionals the latest information on diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal and liver diseases. Learn more and register.


College News

Vote now for hospital rankings!

The U.S. News & World Report Hospital Rankings voting period has begun on Doximity. These rankings are important to hospitals, including the College's joint venture hospital, Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center, and our affiliated hospitals. All physicians are encouraged to participate in the 2019-2020 rankings by logging in to their Doximity profile, then clicking the box in the upper right of their profile to vote for up to five hospitals who provide the best specialty care.

Volunteers needed for diabetes study

Volunteers with a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes are needed for studies to determine how arginine, an amino acid that the body uses to maintain good health, is utilized by people with type 2 diabetes. Eligible participants must be African American or Hispanic men between the ages of 20 and 60 years, diagnosed with type 2 diabetes within the last 5 years, overweight and with no other chronic medical conditions. Participants will receive a no-cost physical examination, blood tests and a DXA scan to measure muscle, fat and bone. Parking will be paid and participants may be compensated up to $375. Finish compliance training

One week remains to complete the required 2019 compliance training on "Outside Interests and Disclosures." All Baylor employees and trainees must complete the training by March 29 or be subject to disciplinary actions, up to and including suspension of merit increases, incentive payments or bonuses for paid employees and a professionalism report and administrative hold on academic records for learners. Complete training online.
