Ellis honored by breast center consortium

Dr. Matthew Ellis, McNair Scholar and director and professor of the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center, received the 2017 Impact Award from the National Consortium of Breast Centers. The NCBC Impact Award is presented to an individual or organization that has made a significant impact in the general field of breast health, specifically the development of breast centers.

Jankovic honored by neurological society

Dr. Joseph Jankovic, professor of neurology and director of the Parkinson's Disease Center and Movement Disorders Clinic, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Texas Neurological Society during its annual winter meeting in Austin in February. Jankovic was selected for the honor by his peers based on his dedication as a clinician and educator in neurology.

Paust receives NIH award

Dr. Silke Paust, assistant professor of pediatrics, was awarded a $363,101 grant from the National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for her research on influenza A. The goal of her project is to develop a universal prophylactic and/or therapeutic agent to prevent or treat influenza A infection and associated pathologies. Paust also is part of Baylor's Center for Human Immunobiology.

Wear crazy socks in recognition of World Down Syndrome Day

World Down Syndrome Day is commemorated Tuesday, March 21, and to show support the Baylor community is invited to join the international awareness day by wearing crazy socks. Snap a photo of your crazy socks and send to Audrey.Marks@bcm.edu to share on Baylor's social media channels. Be sure to include your name and department. The date for World Down Syndrome Day was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome, which causes Down syndrome. Learn more online.

Alford Lecture March 23

The third annual Bobby R. Alford, M.D., Grand Rounds Distinguished Lecture is Thursday, March 23, at 3 p.m. in McMillian Auditorium, featuring Dr. Bert O'Malley, Jr., professor and chair of otorhinolaryngology and co-director of the Center for Head and Neck Cancer at the University of Pennsylvania. His talk is titled "TORS Story: An Odyssey into the Diffusion of Innovation." The lecture is endowed by the Diana Helis Henry and Adrienne Helis Malvin Medical Research Foundations.

Marfan Walk March 25

The second annual Marfan Foundation Houston Walk for Victory is Saturday, March 25, from noon to 3 p.m. at Discovery Green. Help raise money and awareness for Marfan Syndrome, a genetic connective tissue disorder that affects the heart, eyes and bones, by joining or donating to Coselli's Crusaders, captained by Dr. Joseph Coselli, professor and vice chair of surgery, or Team Texas Children's.

Help support breast cancer awareness, education and research by joining the Baylor team for the Harley's Angels 5k Fun Run March 25 at the San Jacinto Battleground in La Porte. Sign up online. Team name: Baylor College of Medicine; team password: breastcenter06.

Community Health Day March 25

First-year medical students are hosting the 11th annual Community Health Day March 25 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Ethel Mosley Young Elementary School, 3555 Bellfort Ave. The event will include health screenings and information for families in the area. Baylor-Rice U. heart health course

Baylor College of Medicine and Rice University are jointly offering Heart Health: Prevention, Treatments and Innovations, an evening education course through Rice's School of Continuing Studies, March 29 – April 26. Geared toward non-health professionals, the course will present the latest clinical and research insights as well as innovations to promote heart health and prevent heart disease. The course is chaired by Dr. Hani Jneid, associate professor of medicine and an interventional cardiologist. Learn more and register online.

Registration open for venom conference

The National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, along with Texas Children's Hospital and the Houston Zoo, are sponsoring the 5th Annual Houston Venom Conference, April 11 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium. The conference teaches healthcare providers about various envenomations and how to treat them and includes lectures at Baylor, behinds-the-scenes tours of the Houston Zoo and a reception at the Houston Zoo Reptile House. The conference is directed by Dr. Spencer Greene, assistant professor of emergency medicine and director of medical toxicology. Register online by April 5. Continuing medical and nursing education credits offered.

Hess Truck education kits a success!

The College's collaboration with the Hess Corp. to provide a free STEM education curriculum for schools nationwide has been a tremendous success. More than 10,000 applications were submitted by educators for the STEM kit, which includes a teacher's manual with student activity sheets and 10 2016 Hess Toy Truck and Dragsters. In addition, more than 4,200 STEM guides for families who already own the toy cars were downloaded from the Center for Educational Outreach's BioEd Online.

Silent auction support MS 150

Team Baylor College of Medicine will ride in the 2017 BP MS 150 April 29 - 30 with nearly 100 cyclists. The team will host a silent auction March 30 from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at main Baylor in the E Hallway. All money raised will go toward a donation on behalf of Team Baylor for the MS 150 campaign to combat multiple sclerosis. Silent auctions items will include a 6-month YMCA membership, sports memorabilia, gift cards and more. If you have any questions or would like to donate an auction item, please contact Jesse Gavin.
