Baylor women among Top 25 in healthcare

Claire BassettDr. Joyce DavidsonDr. Joan MastrobattistaClaire Bassett, vice president of communications and community outreach, Dr. Joyce Davidson, assistant professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and Dr. Joan Mastrobattista, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Baylor and Texas Children's, have been named recipients of the Top 25 Women in Health Care Award - Houston by the National Diversity Council and Healthcare Diversity Council. The women honored have exemplified strong leadership, commitment to the success of their organization and dedication to quality healthcare, and have served as champions for diversity and role models for other women.

Jaber earns humanitarian award

Dr. Omar JaberDr. Omar Jaber, clinical postdoctoral fellow in pediatrics, has been honored with the Distinguished Alumni Humanitarian Award from his alma mater, Ross University. The award recognizes physicians whose significant contributions of leadership or service has enriched the well-being of others. Jaber has participated in international humanitarian missions in the West Bank, Jordan and the Philippines, and he also has been involved in healthcare issues within the immigrant and refugee population, particularly among Muslims.

Utech named to VA nutrition services

Dr. Anne UtechDr. Anne Utech, assistant professor of medicine, was appointed as national director for the Veteran Health Administration's Nutrition and Food Services. In this role, she will oversee veteran nutrition policies and programs, strategic planning, national partnerships and serve as the VA's primary subject matter expert. The VA Nutrition and Food Services has approximately 8,000 clinical and administrative staff that provide clinical nutrition care to enrolled veterans and serve more than 39 million meals annually to veterans in VA medical centers and community living centers.

Versalovic elected AAM fellow

Dr. James VersalovicDr. James Versalovic, professor and director of the Texas Children's Microbiome Center, has been elected to fellowship in the American Academy of Microbiology. Fellows are elected annually through a highly selective, peer-review process based on their records of scientific achievement and original contributions that have advanced microbiology.

March 18-22: Red Risk webinar series

Join the Translational Research Institute for Space Health (TRISH) at Baylor for a webinar series March 18-22 exploring the most pressing risks to human health in space, NASA's Red Risks. TRISH welcomes researchers, entrepreneurs and their novel ideas for funding opportunities to address these risks and keep astronauts safe in space. Sign up online.

March 19 and 28: Women's History Month events

-Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society Colloquium, March 19, noon, Kleberg Auditorium, featuring Dr. Douglas Girod, University of Kansas System, on the importance of supporting women in academic medicine and science to improve our healthcare systems and society. Co-sponsored by the Office of Institutional Diversity, Inclusion and Equity.
-March 28, 2019: Women of Excellence Recognition and Keynote Address, March 28, noon, Cullen Auditorium, where Baylor senior leadership will honor 'Women of Excellence' at Baylor and allies who support women in academic medicine, followed by a talk by Dr. Hannah Valantine, chief officer for scientific workforce diversity at the NIH.

World Down Syndrome Day

World Down Syndrome Day will be commemorated Thursday, March 21, and to show support the Baylor community is invited to join the international awareness day by wearing "crazy" socks – colorful, fun or even mismatched! Snap a photo of your crazy socks and send to Anna.Kiappes@bcm.edu to share on Baylor's social media channels. Be sure to include your name and department. The date for World Down Syndrome Day was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome, which causes Down syndrome. Learn more online.

March 21: Professionalism talk on humanistic values

Join the Center for Professionalism March 21 at 4 p.m. in room 201A for "Healthcare at the Crossroads: Sustaining Humanistic Traditions in Today's Practice Environment," by Dr. William Branch, the Carter Smith Sr. Chair in Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine, who has had a lifelong interest in medical education and residency training. CME credit available; light reception following.

March 22: Innovations in Primary Immunodeficiency and Clinical Immunology

The fourth biennial William T. Shearer Symposium, "Innovations in Primary Immunodeficiency and Clinical Immunology," is Friday, March 22, InterContinental Houston – Medical Center, 6750 Main Street. The symposium features talks by Dr. Sergio Rosenzweig, a pediatrician and clinical immunologist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Baylor's Dr. Brendan Lee and others. CME credit available. March 23: Primary Care Update

Primary Care Update, a noncommercial primary care conference, presented by the Department of Family and Community Medicine, is Saturday, March 23, 7 a.m. – 4 p.m., McMillian Auditorium at main Baylor. Baylor faculty will offer hour-long sessions on a variety of primary care topics, from wound care to smoking cessation and more. Up to 7.0 CME credits available. See the agenda and register.

Health and Science Policy Research Day

The Health and Science Policy Research Day will be held April 2 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium. Speakers include Baylor's Dr. Paul Klotman and Dr. Amy McGuire, as well as Dr. Tim Caulfield from the University of Alberta, who will explore celebrity health advice and trends. A wide range of topics related to science policy will be addressed in dynamic presentations, followed by a poster session to end the day. Abstract submissions for the poster session should be submitted online.

Match Day!

Match Day is today! This event culminates the National Resident Matching Program, which pairs fourth-year medical students with residency programs throughout the nation. Congratulations to all of our fourth-year medical students participating in the match. The Baylor community is invited to join the festivities in the courtyard at main Baylor. Festivities begin at 10:30 a.m. and the envelopes are revealed promptly at 11 a.m.

The next talk in the MoneyTalk series will focus on tax planning, Wednesday, March 20, at noon in Cullen Auditorium at main Baylor, led by Avo Mavilian of the Houston Chapter of the Society for Financial Awareness. BeWell points available. Learn more.
