Coronavirus Information

CDC recommendations for vaccinated people

The CDC has issued public health recommendations for fully vaccinated people. It's important to note that these guidelines do not extend to the workplace. Guidelines are still in place on the BCM campus, including wearing masks, practicing physical distancing and following rules for meetings and gatherings. Awards and Recognitions

Kahalley earns NCI grant

Dr. Lisa KahalleyDr. Lisa Kahalley, associate professor of pediatrics, was awarded a $6.7M R01 grant from the National Cancer Institute for a large, multinational, multidisciplinary study comparing symptom burden/toxicity, neurocognitive change and functional outcomes in pediatric brain tumor patients treated with proton vs. photon radiotherapy. Kahalley is leading this study with Dr. Donald Mabbott at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and Dr. Pamela Hinds at Children's Hospital in Washington, D.C.

Mattox and colleagues honored

Dr. Ken MattoxMedical and health professionals at Baylor and Ben Taub Hospital were honorees at the Institute for Spirituality and Health Caring Heart Celebration Feb. 25. Dr. Ken Mattox received the Rabbi Samuel E. Karff Caring Heart Award on his colleagues' behalf at the virtual event, which recognized frontline and essential workers during COVID-19 for their sacrifices and expressed gratitude for their service. SmartPod earns honors for Harris County

Harris County Precinct 2 was one of the winners of the American City & County 2020 Crown Communities Award for its Access2Health SmartPod collaboration with Baylor Global Health. The adaptable, mobile healthcare units are being used for COVID-19 testing in two Precinct 2 locations, and in the future will be available for other healthcare needs. Read more.

Today: Big data tool training

Training on the EPIC SlicerDicer data analytics tool starts today at 4:30 p.m., via Zoom, (Passcode 000150) and continues into April. The one-hour session is geared to clinicians and researchers with access to BCM EPIC who are interested in using clinical data to address questions that arise in their work. Grand Rounds on women in academic medicine

Health Equity Grand Rounds presents "Personal Perspectives on Women and Leadership in Academic Medicine," with Dr. Vivian Pinn, retired director of the Office of Research on Women's Health at the NIH, Thursday, March 18, 12:15 – 1:15 p.m., via Zoom (Passcode: 041933). Offered by the Center of Excellence in Health Equity, Training and Research in collaboration with the Department of Medicine.

Clinical Research Methods course

Sessions of Clinical Research Methods, presented by the Department of Family and Community Medicine, will be offered virtually in March and May. This beginner's course aims to train health professionals to analyze simple data using statistical analytics software. Learn more and register.

Virtual Bioethics Intensive Course

Houston Methodist Hospital and Baylor's Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy will host a virtual Bioethics Intensive Course April 12 – 16. This is geared toward individuals who encounter complex ethical challenges in the healthcare setting and wish to receive advanced training. For more information and to register, click here.

Monday marked International Women’s Day. Read about some of the important work being done by women at Baylor College of Medicine in this month's issue of BCM Family.

Mock interviews

Volunteers are needed to conduct virtual mock admissions interviews with students from diverse backgrounds, including underrepresented, first-generation, non-traditional, and sexual orientation and gender minority groups during the Sixth Annual Diversity Admissions Symposium April 17. The event supports and encourages these students to pursue medical, health professions or biomedical sciences careers. Email institutionaldiversity@bcm.edu.
