Gilbert honored at hometown ceremony

Dr. Louis GilbertDr. Louis Gilbert, a medical resident in the department of family and community medicine, was recognized in his hometown of Silsbee, Texas, as a part of the town’s Black History Month celebration. Gilbert was honored at a ceremony at the Silsbee Ice House Museum and Cultural Center as an African American healthcare professional and was profiled in the local newspaper.

Top scientific minds

Several Baylor researchers were included on the 2015 list of the world’s most influential scientific minds by Thomson Reuters. Researchers recognized in the report published the greatest number of highly cited papers over an 11-year period or published “hot” papers – those cited at high levels immediately following publication – over a two-year period. Baylor honorees included Dr. Christie Ballantyne, Dr. Richard Gibbs, Dr. Joseph Jankovic, Donna Muzny, Dr. C. Kent Osborne, Simon White and Dr. Kim Worley.

DocTalk March 14

Dr. Ibrahim OmeisThe next DocTalk is Monday, March 14, at noon at the Jamail Specialty Care Center, fourth floor conference rooms 120/125, with Dr. Ibrahim Ali Omeis, assistant professor of neurosurgery, on spine and neck disorders and pain with a neurological basis. DocTalk is a series of lunchtime talks with Baylor doctors on a variety of health topics, followed by a Q&A. Eligible employees who attend will receive BCM BeWell Vitality points.

Match Day March 18

Match Day is Friday, March 18, in the Baylor courtyard on the main campus. The program will start at 10:40 a.m., and fourth-year medical students will open their envelopes notifying them of their residency match promptly at 11 a.m. More than 170 fourth-year medical students at Baylor are participating in Match Day, which is the culmination of the national program that pairs fourth-year medical students with residency programs throughout the nation. Faculty and staff are encouraged to drop in on the courtyard festivities.

Nutrition talk March 28

As part of Nutrition Month, Roberta Anding, registered dietician at Baylor, will present “Take This, Not That,” a talk on dietary supplements on Monday, March 28, from noon to 1 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium at the main campus. Eligible employees who attend will receive 200 BCM BeWell Vitality Points. For questions, email wellness@bcm.edu.

Bowl to raise money for charity!

Join Baylor medical students for the Charity Bowling Ball on Friday, April 1, from 6 to 9 p.m., at Palace Bowling Lanes, 4191 Bellaire Blvd. The event benefits Houston H.O.M.E.S. Clinic and the International Rescue Committee, which provide healthcare services to the local and global community, respectively. Register as a team or individual and make donations online.

Register for Academies Collaborative Conference

Registration and abstract submission is open for the 2016 Annual Academies Collaborative Conference, set for Friday, May 20, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Pavilion for Women at Texas Children’s Hospital. The theme of the conference is “Assessment: The Driver of Learning,” and the plenary speaker is Dr. Jason Frank, a clinician-educator at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Attendees will have opportunities to interact with medical educators from across the region and learn about educational innovations and more. Find more information and register online.

Learn money saving strategies and earn a chance to a win prize!

From March 11 through April 1, the three weeks leading up to Financial Fitness Week, take the Square Up Your Savings Challenge, which will challenge you to complete 10 savings missions. You will build financial savings know-how and discover money-saving strategies. Plus, every time you complete a mission, you will earn the chance to win an iPad Mini. You FIRST News

Party on the Plaza April 6

The You FIRST Program will host a Party on the Plaza on Wednesday, April 6, at Main Baylor in the courtyard from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Enjoy a free barbecue lunch and the chance to interact with colleagues. There also will be a lip sync battle during the event. Monetary prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place winners. Learn more about the contest rules and register to participate. The deadline to register is Friday, March 25. Shuttle buses will be available from Greenway Plaza and Kirby to the Party on the Plaza.

Softball tournament April 23

The YouFIRST Program will host a co-ed softball tournament for BCM employees and students on Saturday, April 23, at the Houston Sportsplex, 12631 Main Street, 77085. BCM BeWell Vitality Points will be awarded to eligible employees who participate in the event. Find more details and sign-up to participate. The deadline to register is Friday, March 25.
