Chen named senior member of NAI

Dr. Johnny ChenDr. Changyi (Johnny) Chen, professor of surgery, has been elected to the rank of senior member of the National Academy of Inventors. Senior members of the NAI are chosen for their success in patents, licensing and commercialization and for producing technologies that have impacted society. To date, Chen has published more than 280 scientific articles, received 16 U.S. or international patents and has been awarded more than $20 million in grants to support his research programs as well as his collaborative research programs.

Davis named to dietary guidelines committee

Dr. Teresa DavisDr. Teresa Davis, professor of pediatrics – nutrition, was selected to be a member of the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. The independent advisory committee works to ensure America's dietary guidance reflects the latest science. Davis was one of 20 nationally recognized scientists named to the committee by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture and the Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Morse completes fellowship program

Dr. Meroe MorseDr. Meroë B. Morse, assistant professor of medicine, has graduated from the Fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson. The two-year program provides a combination of distance and hands-on education in prevention-focused, proactive, patient-centered care. Morse focus is on treatment for chronic pain.

Joe Neikro Foundation supports Baylor faculty

Dr. Jeremiah JohnsonDr. Peter KanDr. Jeremiah Johnson, assistant professor of neurosurgery, is a recipient of a 'Houston Knuckleball' Patients' Choice Award from the Joe Neikro Foundation. He will be honored at the foundation's annual awards and fundraising dinner in April in Houston. The foundation funds research, treatment and awareness of brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations and hemorrhagic strokes, and provides patient and family support. It was founded by Natalie Neikro in honor of her father, former Houston Astros pitcher Joe Neikro, known for throwing a knuckleball pitch, who died of a brain aneurysm in 2006. In addition, Dr. Peter Kan, assistant professor of neurosurgery, is a recipient of a 2019 Joe Neikro Research Grant for his project, "Examining the cognitive outcomes of patients with UIAs undergoing treatment with flow diversion."

March 11: Precision Medicine Grand Rounds

Learn about "Epigenetics, Stem Cells and Carcinogenesis" at a talk by Dr. Shuk-Mei Ho, director of the Cincinnati Cancer Center, Monday, March 11, noon to 1 p.m., Denton A. Cooley Auditorium at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center, 6770 Bertner Ave. The event is part of the Precision Medicine Grand Rounds series, which supports Baylor's strategic plan. March 11 - April 17: Life science entrepreneurship course

The Life Science Entrepreneurship course starts March 11 and will be held through April 17 at Rice University. It is a free interdisciplinary and interinstitutional class about the roles of scientists, engineers, M.D.s and M.B.A.s in life science entrepreneurship. For credit, certificate or audit. March 12: DocTalk on allergies

March 16: Event to support breast cancer awareness

March 23: Forensic evaluation training

A training event on conducting forensic evaluations for asylum seekers will be held Saturday, March 23, at main Baylor. Hosted by Physicians for Human Rights at Baylor College of Medicine, the training is open to physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, mental health providers, social workers and trainees and will include sessions on human rights and asylum law, physical and psychological forensic evaluations, and affidavit writing. -Houston Venom Conference, Tuesday, April 30, in Cullen Auditorium with a tour and reception at the Houston Zoo, to teach healthcare providers how to recognize and treat snake bites, spider bites, scorpion and jellyfish stings and other envenomations, led by Dr. Spencer Greene, director of medical toxicology consultation services. -Pri-Med Southwest Conference, developed in partnership with BCM and course directors Dr. Stephen Greenberg, Michael Fordis and Richard Hamill, May 1 – 3 at the George R. Deadline approaching for completing compliance training

All Baylor employees and trainees must complete the 2019 compliance training on "Outside Interests and Disclosures" by March 29 or be subject to disciplinary actions, up to and including suspension of merit increases, incentive payments or bonuses for paid employees and a professionalism report and administrative hold on academic records for learners.
