Davis and Whitney honored by TMA

Dr. Carla Davis and Dr. Stephen Whitney, both assistant professor of pediatrics, have received the Texas Medical Association’s Award for Excellence in Medicine at the Gold Level. The award recognizes physicians for their achievements and dedication to teaching and service to academic and organized medicine. The awards will be presented at the TMA’s TexMed 2016 conference in Dallas in April.

Schaaf earns inaugural award from ASCI

Dr. Christian Schaaf, assistant professor of molecular and human genetics, is the recipient of the inaugural Donald Seldin-Holly Smith Award for Pioneering Research from the American Society for Clinical Investigation. The honor includes an unrestricted award of $30,000 to advance his academic and research efforts. Schaaf will be honored at the ASCI annual meeting in April and will deliver a scientific talk at the society’s 2017 annual meeting. His research focuses on understanding the genetic and molecular basis of human cognitive and behavioral disorders.

Evenings With Genetics March 8 on neurofibromatosis

Evenings With Genetics will be held Tuesday, March 8, at the Children’s Museum of Houston on Neurofibromatosis Type 1: Updates in Lifelong Care and Screening, presented by Dr. Michael Wangler, assistant professor of molecular and human genetics, Dr. Surya Rednam, assistant professor of pediatrics – oncology, and Dr. Jennifer Posey, clinical instructor in molecular and human genetics. Light refreshments at 6:30 p.m., program starts at 7 p.m. The event is free but registration is required online or by calling 832-822-4280.

Student Research Symposium March 10

The 16th annual Henry J.N. Taub/James K. Alexander Medical Student Research Symposium is Thursday, March 10, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium, with poster presentations in Rayzor Lounge. Dr. Mark Kline, the Ralph D. Feigin Chair of Pediatrics and physician-in-chief at Texas Children’s Hospital, will deliver the keynote talk at 12:15 p.m. on “Global Child Health at the Tipping Point: Lessons from the Field.”

Pancreatic cancer educational lecture March 10

The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is hosting a free, educational lecture at the Medical Center Marriott on Thursday, March 10, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. for patients, caregivers and healthcare professionals. Dr. George Van Buren, assistant professor of surgery, will speak on treatment approaches and there also will be a session on pancreatic cancer research. Join the BCM/TCH March for Babies walk team!

Join the BCM/TCH team at the March of Dimes’ March for Babies to support research and programs that promote full-term pregnancies and healthy babies! The five-mile walk will be held Sunday, April 24, at the University of Houston. Register online.

Check out Baylor display at rodeo and enter to win tickets

Baylor’s new ad campaign has launched and includes a display at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo featuring Baylor patients and their remarkable achievements. It can be found inside NRG Center near the Agventure area. Throughout rodeo season, you are encouraged to take a photo by the display or anywhere at the Rodeo and share on social media. Be sure to tag @BCMHouston on Twitter and Instagram and use #BCMRodeo. Enter online for your chance to win Rodeo tickets or stop by the Office of Communications and Community Outreach, suite 176B in the Cullen Building, to enter in person.

Register for BCM BeWell onsite biometric screening

The BCM BeWell program will again offer onsite biometric screenings. This assessment helps identify potential health problems like diabetes or heart disease. It includes physical measurements and a blood draw to determine fasting blood glucose levels, blood pressure, total cholesterol, waist circumference and body mass index. Eligible employees who complete a BCM BeWell Biometric Screening and their 2016 Vitality Health Review by Nov. 25 will receive 3,500 BCM BeWell Vitality points. The biometric screening can be completed through BCM BeWell or by your primary care physician to qualify for the incentive. Party on the Plaza April 6

The You FIRST Program will host a Party on the Plaza on Wednesday, April 6, at Main Baylor in the Courtyard from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Enjoy a barbecue lunch and the opportunity to mingle with faculty, staff and students. There also will be a lip sync battle during the event. Individual and group lip sync performers of up to 10 BCM faculty, students and staff are invited to participate. Monetary prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place winners. Learn more about the contest rules and register to participate. The deadline to register is Friday, March 25. Shuttle buses will be available from Greenway Plaza and Kirby to the Party on the Plaza.

Softball tournament April 23

The YouFIRST Program will host a co-ed softball tournament for BCM employees and students on Saturday, April 23, at the Houston Sportsplex, 12631 Main Street, 77085. BCM BeWell Vitality Points will be awarded to eligible employees who participate in the event. Find more details and sign-up to participate. The deadline to register is Friday, March 25.
