Heslop honored for career achievements

Dr. Helen HeslopDr. Helen Heslop, director of the Center for Cell and Gene Therapy, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation at the Transplantation and Cellular Therapy Meetings held last week in Houston. Her key contributions to the field research on adoptive T cell immunotherapy to improve hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and cancer therapy.

Parsons named deputy director of children’s cancer center

Dr. Will ParsonsDr. Will Parsons, associate professor of pediatrics, was appointed as deputy director of Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Centers. Parsons also serves as co-director of the Brain Tumor Program, co-director of the Cancer Genetics and Genomics Program and director of the Center for Precision Oncology in the Texas Children's Cancer Center. He is nationally recognized in the area of cancer genomics and the use of precision oncology for the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric cancer patients.

Rivera honored for MS efforts in Cuba

Dr. Victor RiveraDr. Victor Rivera, Distinguished Emeritus Professor of Neurology, was the guest of honor at the 30th anniversary celebration of the International Restorative Neurology Center in Havana, Cuba. He was recognized for his support of multiple sclerosis research and education in Cuba and received a special recognition from the MS Cuban Association, a patient organization.

Bhatt and Romany recognized for clinical research

Dr. Amit BhattDr. Amit Bhatt and Gihan Romany were recognized as top recruiters of 2018 for having the highest amount of patients enrolled in Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group studies. Funded by the National Eye Institute, part of the NIH, the collaborative network of more than 300 pediatric ophthalmologists and optometrists in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom is dedicated to facilitating multicenter clinical research in eye disorders that affect children.

March 2: TMC Orchestra performance

The TMC Orchestra, which includes several members of the Baylor family, will present "From Russia with Love," Saturday, March 2, at 7 p.m. at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts. The program includes "The Tsar's Bride Overture," "Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, Op. 23," and "Symphonic Dances, Op. 45." Buy tickets online.

March 7: Medical Student Research Symposium

The 19th annual Henry J.N. Taub and James K. Alexander Medical Student Research Symposium is Thursday, March 7, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Research posters will be on display in Rayzor Lounge and a keynote address will be held in Cullen Auditorium from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. by Dr. Kent Osborne on "Mechanisms of Endocrine Therapy Resistance in Breast Cancer."

March 8-9: Global health conference

The Houston Global Health Collaborative will host its seventh annual conference March 8-9 in the Texas Medical Center. Open to healthcare providers, trainees and others interested in global health, the conference will include speakers from Baylor and other institutions speaking on topics such as global surgery, migrant health and translational science in global health. The new Baylor Medicine – Family Medicine clinic has opened at 3743 Westheimer Road at the intersection with Weslayan in the River Oaks area. Baylor is part of the All of Us Research Program, which has a simple mission to speed up health research breakthroughs through a precision medicine approach.
