Awards and Recognitions

Preventza named as journal associate editor

Dr. Ourania PreventzaDr. Ourania Preventza, professor of surgery, was named associate editor of Operative Techniques in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery: A Comparative Atlas, one of the official journals of the Association for Thoracic Surgery.

Rooney elected microbiology fellow

Dr. Cliona RooneyDr. Cliona Rooney, professor of pediatrics and part of the Center for Cell and Gene Therapy, was one of 68 new fellows elected to American Academy of Microbiology for 2020. Fellows are an honorific leadership group within the academy, elected annually through a selective, peer-review process based on their records of scientific achievement and original contributions that have advanced microbiology.

Srivaths honored by blood disorder foundation

Dr. Lakshmi SrivathsDr. Lakshmi Srivaths, associate professor of pediatrics – hematology, was selected as an Honorary Member of the Foundation for Women and Girls with Blood Disorders. In this role, she will help advance the foundation's efforts in improving clinical care, education and research in the field of adolescent females with bleeding and thrombophilia/thrombosis. She has been involved with the foundation for 10 years in various roles, including as a member of the Medical Advisory Council and chair of the Education and Advocacy Sub-committee.

March 2: Blood drive

Another blood drive will be held at main Baylor by Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, Monday, March 2, 11:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge. Schedule an appointment to donate.

March 3: Market Days

Market Days, sponsored by the Resource Stewardship and Sustainability and the BCM BeWell programs, will be held Tuesday, March 3, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor. This event features local, organic and sustainable products from a variety of vendors.

March 3: BCM Group on Women in Medicine and Science launches

The new BCM chapter of the Association of American Medical Colleges Group of Women in Medicine and Science will host its inaugural event, "Strategies to Advance your Career," March 3, noon - 1:30 p.m. in room N311, main Baylor. Light snacks will be served; RSVP to Kimberly.Lopez@bcm.edu. Women at Baylor are invited to tweet or share a photo on Instagram that speaks to their role at the College in science and medicine using the hashtag #BCMWomeninMedicineandScience and tag @BCM_equity. March 6 and 9: Colon cancer events

  • Members of the Baylor community are invited to participate in National Dress in Blue Day on Friday, March 6, to raise awareness and educate people on colon cancer and how they can reduce their risk of the disease. All those participating can gather at noon in the main Baylor courtyard for a photo that will be shared on social media.
  • On Monday, March 9, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner will join Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center physicians and representatives from the American Cancer Society outside the John P. McGovern Texas Medical Center Commons to declare March Colon Cancer Awareness Month in Houston. The event begins at 11 a.m.

From Stress to Strength autism program

From Stress to Strength, a three-part program for parents of teens and young adults with intellectual and development disabilities and/or autism will be offered March 7, March 28 and April 18 by Baylor and Texas Children's Hospital. The program offers techniques to lower stress, depression and anxiety and information on transitioning from pediatric to adult care. Offered in English and Spanish; learn more and register online.

Genomic hackathon apps due by March 15

The Human Genome Sequencing Center is hosting the Structural Variation in the Cloud Hackathon on April 19-21. Participants will develop pipelines for large-scale genomic analyses. Researchers, including students and postdocs, are invited to apply. Applications are due by March 15. Learn more and register.

  • Second annual Texas Interventional Endoscopy Workshop: Submucosal & Transluminal Endoscopy, Friday, March 27, at the Baylor Simulation Center, main Baylor. Gastroenterologists will provide hands-on training and roundtable discussion on advanced endoscopic procedures. CME credit available. Register online.

Recognizing Black History Month

In recognition of Black History Month, members of the Student National Medical Association from Baylor College of Medicine, UTMB and UTHealth's McGovern Medical School came together in Houston's Freedmen's Town to highlight the accomplishments of African-American medical students, shown in this photo. In addition, African-American trailblazers in medicine and science have been highlighted by students on the Office of Institutional Diversity, Inclusion and Equity's social media. Nominate for Salute to Nurses!

The Houston Chronicle will honor area nurses in May through its annual Salute to Nurses special section and event. The top 150 local nurses selected by a panel of experts based on nominations will be recognized in the Chronicle, and the top 15 will be recognized at a special lunch. Read about Baylor Nursing Supervisor Allison Carter, who was honored in 2018, and nominate a Baylor nurse who exemplifies the best in the nursing profession by March 13 for the 2020 honors!

Submit stories for narrative medicine program

Calling all creative writers! The Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy invites physicians, researchers, faculty, students and staff to submit a story on the theme of hope to the Narrative Medicine program. Submit a 600-900 word story sketch by March 9. Finalists will workshop and share their stories at an event on April 16. Find more information.

Med school admissions podcast

The School of Medicine admissions deans, Dr. Karen E. Johnson and Dr. Jesus Vallejo, recently recorded a podcast called "All Access: Med School Admissions." They discussed the holistic admissions process, what the Admissions Committee looks for in an applicant, curricular changes and other topics. Listen to the podcast.
