Flags at half-staff

Flags at Baylor and throughout the country have been flown at half-staff this week to remember the 500,000 Americans who have died of COVID-19. In an official proclamation, President Biden noted that, "We, as a Nation, must remember them so we can begin to heal, to unite, and find purpose as one Nation to defeat this pandemic."


Winter Weather Recovery

Relief fund & other resources

Donations can be made to BCM’s Employee Relief Fund to assist those who were impacted during the winter storm. Requests for accessing relief funds should be directed through department/center/office administrators. In addition, see a list of other resources for winter weather recovery.


Awards and Recognitions

Burt earns NCI grant

Dr. Bryan BurtDr. Bryan Burt, associate professor of surgery and chief of the section of general thoracic surgery, has received a five-year, $2.5 million MERIT Award from the National Cancer Institute for his study to identify biological markers predictive of mesothelioma response to immunotherapy.

Chumpitazi, Hsu named to EM career development roles

Dr. Corrie ChumpitaziDr. Deborah HsuDr. Corrie Chumpitazi, associate professor, and Dr. Deborah Hsu, associate professor and section head, both of pediatric emergency medicine, were appointed to the new Women in Pediatric EM subcommittee of American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Emergency Medicine. Both are involved in career development activities on the subcommittee. In addition, Hsu serves as chair-elect of the AAP Section on Emergency Medicine Executive Committee.

Hotez receives alumni honor

Dr. Peter HotezDr. Peter Hotez, dean of Baylor's National School of Tropical Medicine and professor of pediatrics and molecular virology and microbiology, is the recipient of the 2021 Award of Distinction from Weill Cornell Medical College, the institution's most prestigious alumni award. Hotez is a world-renowned expert in neglected tropical diseases and vaccine development and advocacy who has served as a critical voice during the COVID-19 pandemic by sharing reliable, evidence-based information. He will be recognized at a virtual ceremony in May.

Lee elected to physiatry association board

Dr. Michael LeeDr. Michael Lee, professor and chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, was elected as a member-at-large to the Association of Academic Physiatrists at the organization's 2021 conference, held virtually Feb. 9 - 13. The association is the largest membership society for academic physiatry.

NIH rankings

Baylor received $318 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health in 2020, ranking it 20th in the nation and first in Texas (since 2006). According to Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research, 12 departments rank in the top 30 in NIH research funding, including a No. 1 ranking in Genetics, which has held this position since 2011. Other notable departments are Pediatrics with a No. 5 ranking, Molecular & Cellular Biology at No. 5, up from No. 8 in 2019, and Medicine, rising to No. 30 from No. 33 in 2019.

Race and genetics talk rescheduled

The Evenings with Genetics event on race and genetics originally scheduled for Feb. 16 has been rescheduled to March 9 due to the winter storm. Register here.

'Picture a Scientist' documentary & panel discussion

Attend a virtual screening of "Picture a Scientist," then participate in a follow-up panel discussion on strategies to address discrimination in science and medicine, March 10, 5 – 6:15 p.m. When you register for the discussion, you will receive a link to view the film during a window from March 7 – 9. Panelists include Drs. Mary Dickinson, Stacy Lloyd and Matthew Rasband; presented by the Center for Professionalism with co-sponsors from the Provost's Office and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

Clinical Research Methods course

Sessions of Clinical Research Methods, presented by the Department of Family and Community Medicine, will be offered virtually in March and May. This beginner's course aims to train health professionals to analyze simple data using statistical analytics software. Learn more and register.

Alumni Reunion 2021

Save the date for Alumni Reunion, a free virtual event April 22 – 23 for all alumni from the School of Medicine, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and the School of Health Professions. Alumni will hear from Baylor's leadership on the latest clinical, research and education news. Connect with former classmates, faculty and current students.
