Hysong earns society fellowship
Dr. Sylvia Hysong, associate professor of medicine – health services research, was selected as a fellow of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. This designation recognizes her outstanding contributions to her field through practice, research, teaching and administration. Hysong is a research scientist in the Center for Innovations in Quality, Effectiveness and Safety, IQuEST, a combined program of Baylor and the DeBakey VA.
Kaplow receives foundation grant
Dr. Julie Kaplow, associate professor of pediatrics – psychology, chief of the psychology service at Texas Children's Hospital and director of the Texas Children's Trauma and Grief (TAG) Center, recently received a $1.2 million grant from the New York Life Foundation. The grant will support the TAG Center's efforts to train clinicians nationwide on evidence-based treatments for childhood trauma and grief. Funding also will help to launch a TAG online learning center, providing resources and webinars for caregivers, teachers, pediatricians and law enforcement.
Surgery research program names new fellows
Baylor's Research Training Program in Cardiovascular Surgery has named its newest fellows, Dr. Ishan Kamat and Dr. Jeffrey Steimle, who will join the Bioengineering and Biodesign Research Track and Basic and Translational Research Track, respectively, in July 2020. The training program, funded by a T32 grant from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, prepares surgical residents and postdoctoral fellows for a research career in cardiovascular surgery.

Dr. Caprice Greenberg, a professor at the University of Wisconsin who speaks about women's issues in medicine, will present two talks on campus.

Feb. 26: OncLive seminar on GI malignancies
Oncologist Dr. Ben Musher, associate professor of medicine, is co-chair of the OncLive State of the Science Summit on GI Malignancies, Wednesday, Feb. 26, 5 – 9 p.m., at the Intercontinental Houston Medical Center, 6750 Main St. Baylor oncologists Dr. Brandon Smaglo and Dr. Tannaz Armaghany and experts from other TMC institutions will present the latest information on pancreatic, colorectal and other gastrointestinal cancers. Register online.
Feb. 27: Talk on racial disparities in medicine
A Black History Month panel discussion on "Racial Disparities in the Lab, Clinic and Community," will be held Feb. 27, 5-7 p.m. in room M321/323 of the DeBakey Building, main Baylor, with a reception following. The event is sponsored by the Association for Graduate Student Diversity, African American Women in Science, African American Men in Science and the Office of Institutional Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity. All members of the Baylor community are invited to attend; to RSVP, email Kimberly Lopez.
March 7: Houston walk for Marfan syndrome
Dr. Joseph Coselli, professor of surgery, and Dr. Shaine Morris, assistant professor of pediatrics - cardiology, are the medical chairs of the Marfan Foundation's 2020 Walk for Victory, March 7, noon to 3 p.m. at Discovery Green. This one-mile walk raises money and awareness for Marfan syndrome, a genetic connective tissue disorder that affects the heart, eyes, bones and spine. Fun activities include face painting, games, a photo booth and more! Join Coselli's Crusaders or Texas Children's Champions for Health.

Complete DOI by March 31
The Disclosure of Outside Interest (DOI) process for 2019 is underway. All calendar year 2019 financial disclosures must be reported by BCM covered personnel through the DOI Portal by March 31. Training materials are available on the BCM DOI intranet page, including a list of department representatives who can offer assistance. Additional questions can be directed to compliance@bcm.edu or research.coi@bcm.edu but due to high volume, responses may be delayed.
