Events Registration open for medical mission conference; Hotez to speak The Mobilizing Medical Mission Conference 2016 will be held Feb. 19 - 20 at Lakewood Church, with Dr. Peter Hotez as one of the featured speakers. The conference brings together healthcare professionals and other experts to discuss their experience and important issues related to providing healthcare in resource-poor settings. Hotez, dean of Baylor’s National School of Tropical Medicine, will speak on Neglected Tropical Diseases: The Most Common Afflictions of the World’s Poor. DocTalk Feb. 24 The next DocTalk is Wednesday, Feb. 24, at noon at the McNair Campus, conference room B, with Dr. Ajith Nair, assistant professor of medicine – cardiology, on recurrent or unexplained heart palpitations – what you should know. DocTalk is an informal series of lunchtime talks with Baylor doctors on a variety of health topics, followed by a Q&A. Eligible employees who attend will receive BCM BeWell Vitality points. Ultrasound course for healthcare professionals Date correction! An Ultrasound Odyssey: Integrating Bedside Ultrasound into Patient Care is Feb. 27. The point-of-care ultrasound course is geared toward physicians and healthcare professionals in critical care, surgery, internal medicine, emergency medicine, family practice, ob/gyn, pediatrics and anesthesia. Breast Cancer Symposium Feb. 27 The Baylor Breast Cancer Symposium 2016, Controversies in the Detection and Management of Early-Stage Breast Cancer, will be held Saturday, Feb. 27, at the Bobby R. Alford Education Center on the McNair Campus. The symposium is for oncology physicians and other healthcare professionals who participate in the care of patients with breast cancer. Register online. CME credits available. Professionalism lectures on perception March 3 Professionalism Matters Month at Baylor will be held in March, with several activities planned. Help Baylor win this annual contest by: College News Zika virus CME activity A presentation by Dr. Peter Hotez on the Zika virus is now available online as a Baylor CME activity. It covers the current evidence for what is known about the virus, its symptoms and the possible associations with microcephaly and other complications. Suitable for clinicians, staff and others. Call for abstracts: Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference Abstracts are being accepted for Baylor’s Annual Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference, set for Thursday, April 28, from 4 - 7:30 p.m. Submissions are encouraged from faculty, fellows, residents and students involving quality and safety, which may include quality improvement projects, patient safety initiatives, educational innovations or similar topics. Abstracts will be peer-reviewed and selected abstracts will be part of an interactive forum and poster presentation at the conference, with 10-minute oral presentations for the top two abstracts. Submission deadline is Friday, March 11, by 5 p.m. Submit online. Applications being accepted for Clinical Science Training Program The Clinical Scientist Training Program is accepting applications for the 2016-17 academic year. The program trains junior faculty, senior residents and sub-specialty fellows for careers in academic research. It awards Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in clinical research through the Baylor Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and a one-year Certificate of Added Qualification in clinical investigation. Volunteer Time Off policy A Volunteer Time Off policy was approved for faculty and staff in support and recognition of the contributions that Baylor employees make in the community. The policy allows benefits-eligible faculty and staff to take the equivalent of one regular scheduled workday per fiscal year to volunteer with organizations that are in alignment with Baylor’s mission, vision and values. The Volunteer Community Service Request Form must be completed and submitted 30 days in advance for approval by the immediate supervisor. Please review the policy for additional details on the approval process. All those who participate in the program will receive a Baylor T-shirt at the end of the fiscal year.
