McGuire elected Hastings fellow

Dr. Amy McGuireDr. Amy McGuire, Leon Jaworski Professor of Biomedical Ethics and director of the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy, has been elected as one of 12 new Hastings Center Fellows. Fellows are chosen for their outstanding work in complex ethical issues in health, health care, science and technology.

Nuila to speak at Inprint ball

Dr. Ricardo NuilaDr. Ricardo Nuila, assistant professor of medicine and director of the Narrative Medicine Program in the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy, will read from his upcoming book on safety net hospitals as a featured speaker at the Inprint Poets and Writers Ball, Saturday, Feb. 8. Inprint is Houston's premier literary arts nonprofit. Poet Terrence Hayes, a MacArthur "genius grant" winner, will be the keynote speaker at the ball.

Rooney honored as leader in science

Dr. Cliona RooneyDr. Cliona Rooney, professor of pediatrics and in the Center for Cell and Gene Therapy, was honored as one of four 2020 Women Leaders in Science by BioHouston, a local organization seeking to position the city as a leader in life science and biotechnology commercialization. Rooney was honored with her fellow awardees at the 11th annual WISE Luncheon last week at the River Oaks Country Club.

Singh serves as patient safety expert

Dr. Hardeep SinghDr. Hardeep Singh, professor of medicine – health services research, was appointed to an expert panel on patient safety for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. This project aims to improve patient safety and reduce or eliminate hospital-acquired conditions, evaluate and address performance gaps and identify opportunities for improvement. In addition, Singh and his team's research has informed new guidance on diagnostic testing and referrals and on test results to reduce errors.

Feb. 5: Baruch A. Brody Lecture

Holly Fernandez, J.D., will present the annual Baruch A. Brody Lecture in Bioethics on "Conflicts of Conscience and Implications for Physicians' Gatekeeping Authority," Wednesday, Feb. 5, 5 – 6 p.m. with a reception following, Houston Methodist Research Institute Auditorium. Fernandez is professor of medical ethics at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. Her work focuses on clinical research ethics and access to investigational therapies. The event is presented by Baylor's Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy, Houston Methodist and Rice University.

Feb. 5: Sleep apnea device presentation

Dr. Andrew Huang, assistant professor of otolaryngology, and Dr. Fidaa Shaib, associate professor of sleep medicine, will present information on a mask- and hose-free obstructive sleep apnea treatment, Wednesday, Feb. 5, 5:30 p.m., Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center – McNair Campus, Conference Room A. Free and open to all.

Feb. 6: Genetics Night at Bellaire HS

For the 12th year, the Department of Molecular and Human Genetics will host a "Genetics Night" for Advanced Placement Biology students at Bellaire High School on Thursday, Feb. 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. Students will participate in a poster session discussion on various genetic disorders. Dr. Fernando Scaglia, professor of molecular and human genetics at Baylor and mentor to the students, will lead the poster judging. The event is free and open to the public.

Feb. 7: Wear Red Day

Baylor will participate in National Wear Red Day Friday, Feb. 7, in support of the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women campaign, a nationwide movement to fight heart disease in women. Be sure to take a photo of you and your colleagues wearing red and send it to Anna Kiappes by 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, to be featured on Baylor's social media channels.

LCME Kickoff: Zoom access

The School of Medicine LCME Kickoff event is next Friday, Feb 7, noon to 1 p.m., offering information on the accreditation process by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and its site visit to BCM in 2021-2022. Annual recycling contest

Baylor is one of more than 300 university campuses competing in RecycleMania from Feb. 2 – March 28. Join the effort by seeing what we can recycle as well as a list of drop-off locations around campus. Questions? Email recycling@bcm.edu.

Tickets to Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo attractions

General Admission tickets and season passes to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, barbecue contest tickets and half-price carnival packs can be purchased in the Office of Communications, suite 176B at main Baylor, through Feb. 28 at noon. Please note that the carnival pack is now a phone app; instructions will be provided upon purchase. Concert tickets are not available. Cash or check payable to Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. School of Medicine leadership positions
