BCM faculty selected as Academy of Medicine, Engineering and Science of Texas (TAMEST) Protégé for 2020 included Dr. Lindsay Burrage, Dr. Sean Hartig, Dr. Mirjana Maletic-Savatic and Dr. Maksim Mamonkin, along with Dr. Maria Elena Bottazzi who was highlighted in last week’s NewsLink. These early career researchers attended the TAMEST annual conference earlier this month in Dallas.


Events

Feb. 7: LCME Kickoff

The School of Medicine will host a LCME Kickoff event Friday, Feb. 7, from noon – 1 p.m. in Kleberg Auditorium in preparation for the site visit to BCM in 2021-2022 by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, which accredits all U.S. medical schools. LCME Co-Secretary Dr. Barbara Barzansky will give a presentation, with lunch on a first-come, first-served basis. All are welcome. In addition, read the January LCME accreditation update from the School of Medicine. Comments, suggestions and questions can be forwarded to SOM-LCME@bcm.edu.

Celebrating CRNAs

Baylor College of Medicine recognizes National CRNA Week this week, Jan. 19-25, a celebration of certified registered nurse anesthetists. Baylor College of Medicine employs CRNAs to practice at many Baylor locations and affiliated hospitals, including Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center, Ben Taub Hospital, Jamail Specialty Care Center, the McNair Campus, the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center and Texas Children's Hospital. Baylor thanks all of its CRNAs for their dedication to their profession, commitment to patient safety and diligence in advancing the mission and vision of the College.

Volunteer opportunities & news


  • A team of BCM volunteers, pictured here, spent Martin Luther King Jr. Day at Project C.U.R.E., where they packed medical supplies for under-resourced hospitals and clinics throughout the world and prepared them for shipping.   • Saturday Morning Science, a STEM outreach program for Houston middle and high school students, started last Saturday and will continue through May 9. Medical, graduate and health professions student volunteers are needed to assist with faculty-led workshops and small-group sessions, including hands-on activities, while helping to build the next generation of scientists and medical professionals.   • The 2020 Science & Engineering Fair of Houston, Feb. 15 at the George R. Brown Convention Center, serves as the regional STEM fair for junior and senior high school students in Harris and 22 other counties. Volunteers are needed to judge projects in 17 categories, including behavioral science and medicine and health. Judges must have at least a bachelor's degree. Sign up online. Questions?
