Muldrew serving on ACGME work group

Dr. Kenneth MuldrewDr. Kenneth L. Muldrew, associate professor of pathology & immunology and internal medicine, was appointed to the Pathology-Medical Microbiology Milestones Working Group of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. This ACGME group is developing a new set of milestones to be used by clinical medical microbiology training programs for competency assessment that includes areas such as professionalism, interpersonal and communication skills, practice-based learning and improvement and systems-based practice.

Mushers publish in high-impact journals

Dr. Benjamin MusherDr. Daniel MusherA paper by Dr. Benjamin Musher, associate professor of medicine – hematology/oncology, was designated as one of the highlights of 2018 by Annals of Internal Medicine. The article is titled "Single-Agent Immunotherapy for Two Types of Cancer in One Patient." Meanwhile, Dr. Daniel Musher, professor of medicine – infectious diseases, has recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine on acute infection and myocardial infarction, marking a span of 57 years since his first paper in NEJM. Shybut serving on editorial board

Dr. Theodore ShybutDr. Theodore Shybut, associate professor of orthopedic surgery, has been named to the editorial board for Arthroscopy: The Journal of Arthroscopy and Related Surgery. In other news, Shybut has been named as the new head team physician for Houston's professional Major League Rugby team, the SaberCats.

History of Medicine lecture series

The annual History of Medicine lectures are underway with talks on alternating Tuesdays from noon – 1 p.m. on the main Baylor campus. Next up is Dr. Garabed Eknoyan, professor of medicine, on "The Quest for Certitude in Medicine," on Jan. 22. Other talks cover healthcare and medicine in Texas' fight for independence and in wars throughout U.S. history. See the full schedule. Open to the Baylor community.

Jan. 22: Campus event marks World Religion Day

The Institute for Spirituality and Health hosts "Interfaith Panel: Celebrating World Religion Day" at noon Tuesday, Jan. 22, in Room 201A. The panel discussion will bring together three traditions to highlight perspectives on the relationship between health and religious identity, belief and practice.

Jan. 23: Beaudet symposium

The Arthur L. Beaudet, M.D., Alumni Scientific Symposium, "Celebrating a Lifetime of Science, Medicine and Mentoring," is Wednesday, Jan. 23, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., in Cullen Auditorium. Dr. Beaudet is professor of molecular and human genetics and former longtime chair of the department.

Jan. 24: Legislative briefing on mental health

An informative discussion on how the 86th state Legislative Session may impact mental health services in Houston is set for Thursday, Jan. 24, 5 – 7 p.m. at the TMC Innovation Institute, 2450 Holcombe Blvd., Suite X. Speakers will include Dr. Elizabeth McIngvale, assistant professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor. RSVP online.

Jan. 26: Best of breast symposium meeting

The 2019 Best of SABCS Houston, organized by Baylor and the Texas Society of Clinical Oncology, is Saturday, Jan. 26, 8 a.m. – 1 p.m., in Kleberg Auditorium at main Baylor. It will provide a critical review of the San Antonio Breast Cancer Conference, which was held in December, providing the latest breast cancer research and data from across the world. Cancer Center moving to McNair Campus

Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center outpatient clinics will move to the seventh floor of the Baylor medical center on the McNair Campus over the holiday weekend and will open on Tuesday, Jan. 22. The new outpatient facility provides Baylor patients and clinical faculty and staff a central location for cancer-related services. Cancer clinics located on the seventh floor will include bone and soft tissue sarcomas; gastrointestinal, liver, pancreas and gynecological cancers; leukemia and lymphoma; endocrine tumors; and the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center. The new facility also will include an expanded infusion center and state-of-the-art pharmacy. All clinic and administrative phone numbers for the Duncan Cancer Center will remain the same. Patients needing information on location and services can call 713-798-2262. Employees visiting the new DLDCCC outpatient clinics can view the shuttle schedule to the McNair Campus. Observing MLK Day

Baylor College of Medicine will be closed on Monday, Jan. 21, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. This day is recognized as a national day of service. Revised Common Rule

Changes to the Common Rule, which is the federal rule governing human subjects research, will go into effect Jan. 21, 2019. Studies approved by the IRB on or after Jan. 21, 2019 will be governed by the new rule. Studies approved prior to Jan. 21 will NOT have to be amended. More information regarding the BCM Institutional Review Board's (IRB) implementation of the Revised Common Rule can be found on the Office of Research News page. The text of the new Final Rule can be found in the federal register online.
