Bellen to lead genetics society

Dr. Hugo BellenDr. Hugo Bellen, professor, March of Dimes Chair in Developmental Biology and Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, has been elected the 2020 vice president and 2021 president of the Genetics Society of America. The GSA serves an international community of scientists who use genetics to make new discoveries and improve lives.

Bottazzi selected as TAMEST protégé

Dr. Maria Elena BottazziDr. Maria Elena Bottazzi, professor of pediatrics and associate dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor, was selected as an Academy of Medicine, Engineering and Science of Texas (TAMEST) Protégé for 2020. This program gave early career researchers the opportunity to attend the TAMEST annual conference to engage with peers. The conference was held earlier this month in Dallas.

Goodell recognized for hematology research

Dr. Peggy GoodellThe International Society for Stem Cell Research awarded the Tobias Lecture Award to Dr. Margaret A. (Peggy) Goodell, chair of the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology and director of the Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Center. The prize recognizes original and promising basic hematology research as well as direct translational or clinical research related to cell therapy in hematological disorders. The award will be presented June 26 during the ISSCR 2020 Annual Meeting in Boston.

Jan. 22: Huffington lecture

The Roy M. Huffington Distinguished Lecture is Wednesday, Jan. 22, at noon in Cullen Auditorium, presented by Dr. David Sabatini, professor of biology at MIT, member of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator. A poster session and reception will follow in Rayzor Lounge from 1:30 – 3 p.m.

Jan. 23-24: Dietary Guidelines meetings

The 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee will meet Jan. 23 – 24, 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., at the Children's Nutrition Research Center in Howland Auditorium. The committee advises the U.S. Secretaries of the Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services on current scientific evidence for components of a healthy and nutritionally adequate diet that will promote health and prevent chronic disease. Dr. Teresa A. Davis, professor of pediatrics at Baylor, is a member of the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. The committee meeting is open to the public. Evolving Ethics: A Working UnConference, will be held Feb. 5 – 7 in the Texas Medical Center. Building on the successful inaugural UnConference hosted by the Cleveland Clinic in 2018, the 2020 UnConference will give clinical ethicists an opportunity to contribute to the evolution of the field’s thinking and practice and to collaboratively explore novel and important issues. College News

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Baylor College of Medicine will be closed on Monday, Jan. 20, in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Members of the Baylor community will participate in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service at Project C.U.R.E., where they will sort medical supplies and prepare them for shipping to those in need around the world. Spots were limited for this outreach project, but volunteer opportunities still are available at the YMCA of Greater Houston, or find other opportunities on the Corporation for National and Community Service website.

Bike rack relocation for safety

Baylor College of Medicine's Office of Security, working with the Student Services Committee, is moving bike racks located outside of the main Baylor buildings to more secure spots on campus to reduce theft. Bike racks currently placed outside the Jewish Institute, Cullen and DeBakey buildings will be relocated inside the Baylor courtyard and behind the DeBakey breezeway (the old gazebo area). The changes will be made in the next several weeks.
