Stout honored by eye institute

Dr. Timothy StoutDr. Timothy Stout, chair and professor of ophthalmology, was honored as the 2018 Distinguished Alumnus at the Doheny Eye Institute Society of Scholars annual alumni dinner on Jan. 6 in Los Angeles in recognition of his contributions to research, education and patient care. The dinner was part of the Doheny Society of Scholars and UCLA Ophthalmology Clinical Challenges Conference.

Genetic Counseling Program appointments

Dr. Lindsay BurrageSalma NassefDr. Lindsay Burrage has been appointed medical director of the Baylor College of Medicine Genetic Counseling Program in the School of Allied Health Sciences, which will accept its inaugural class in fall 2018. In addition, Salma Nassef, a certified genetic counselor, has been named assistant program director.

Jan. 16: Inaugural Precision Environmental Health Symposium

The Center for Precision Environmental Health Inaugural Symposium is Tuesday, Jan. 16, from 1 to 5:30 p.m. in McMillian Auditorium. Topics will include environmental influences on birth defects, neurodegenerative disorders, chronic and metabolic disease and cardiovascular health. With opening remarks from Dr. Paul Klotman and closing remarks from Center director Dr. Cheryl Walker, the symposium also will feature keynote speaker Dr. Linda Birnbaum, director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, speaking on the opportunities and challenges for environmental health in the era of precision medicine. Jan. 17: Two events with AAMC chief diversity officer

Dr. David Acosta, chief diversity officer of the Association of American Medical Colleges, will present the inaugural Health Equity Grand Rounds of Baylor's Office of Institutional Diversity, Inclusion and Health Equity at 8 a.m. Jan. 17 in Cullen Auditorium. His talk is titled "Bridge over Troubled Waters: Crossing the Cultural Divide to Talk about Race & Racism in Academic Medicine and Scientific Institutions." Also on Jan. 17, he will present "Becoming an Equity-Minded Academic Health Center through Inclusion Excellence," at noon in the MD Anderson Hickey Auditorium, 1515 Holcombe Blvd. This event is co-sponsored by Baylor and UT Health's McGovern Medical School; lunch will be provided for the first 150 attendees.

Jan. 18: Physician networking event

Find a Physician Networking Happy Hour is Thursday, Jan. 18, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Baylor College of Medicine Medical Center on the McNair Campus in the first floor conference rooms. Physicians and other healthcare providers in the Faculty Group Practice are invited to network with their colleagues and meet new physicians to build relationships and promote internal referrals. Food and beverages provided; free self-parking in the underground garage.

Jan. 22: Clinical ethics webinar

Baylor's Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy and Houston Methodist are offering a webinar, Clinical Ethics Case Consultations: Tips and Pitfalls, on Jan. 22 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Participants will be led through a complex ethics consultation case and will learn core elements of a consultation, strategies for conducting consultations involving language and cultural barriers and effective methods for working with interpreters, followed by a Q&A. Cost is $50; free for trainees. Register online. Take a deeper drive into the topic at the annual Intensive Bioethics Course in April.

Dan L Duncan Cancer Center events

SABCS Update: If you were unable to attend the 2017 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center will be providing a half-day update seminar on Saturday, Jan. 20 that will provide an overview of the most exciting highlights presented at the 2017 SABCS conference. Immunotherapy Summit: Learn about the latest updates in cancer immunotherapy as medical experts and patients discuss how research and patient participation in clinical trials contribute to finding a cure for all types of cancer. The Cancer Research Institute Immunotherapy Patient Summit, hosted by the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center, will take place Saturday, Jan. 27, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration begins at 9 a.m. Lunch will be provided.
Spin for Gyn: Help raise awareness and funds for Baylor's Woman to Woman gynecologic cancer support program by cycling for a cure! Participants will enjoy a spin cycling class led by professional trainers, and Baylor employees receive 100 Wellness points for participating. You can join as a team and spin anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours all for a wonderful cause. Spin classes will start on the hour at 2, 3 and 4 p.m., but you can join the classes at any time. Judges needed for research symposium

Volunteer judges are needed for the Houston Premedical Academy Symposium on Jan. 31 in Cullen Auditorium and Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor. Students who participate in the academy, a collaboration of the DeBakey High School for Health Professions, the University of Houston and Baylor, will present posters and oral presentations highlighting research conducted last summer. Judges are needed for the morning session, 9 a.m. to noon, and afternoon session, noon to 2 p.m.; however they are not required to stay for the entire session. Lunch will be provided. This is the symposium's 18th year and will include a keynote talk by Dr. Rayne Rouce, assistant professor of pediatrics – hematology/oncology. To volunteer, email Laura Perry.

Make beneficiary elections online: Employees can now designate or change beneficiaries for the Baylor 401(a) Retirement Plan, 403(b) Tax Deferred Investment Plan and 457(b) Deferred Compensation Plan by going online to either Fidelity or TIAA, choosing the Profile section and then clicking add/edit beneficiaries. Leading through influence training: Human Resources will offer "Leading through Influence" on Wednesday, Jan. 24, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The course is designed to empower faculty with techniques on hiring, conflict resolution and employee morale and also includes Insights Discovery, a tool to help understand an individual’s unique working style and gain deeper insight into themselves and their colleagues. Study volunteers needed

Drug to increase immune response study: Healthy volunteers are needed for a study to test a new drug to increase the body's natural immune response, which can provide stronger protection against infections. Eligible volunteers must be male, between the ages of 18 to 40 years and must not have had the flu vaccine within the last 30 days or the tetanus-diphtheria vaccine in the last 5 years. The study will include three clinic visits over a six-week period at the Jamail Specialty Care Center and telephone follow-ups, standard blood work-up and a physical and psychiatric exam. Chikungunya vaccine study: Researchers at the BCM Vaccine Research Center are looking for volunteers to participate in a study evaluating a chikungunya vaccine. Volunteers between the ages of 18 and 45 who are in good general health are needed for this study. Your time will be compensated for participating.
