Awards and Recognitions

Gill gives commencement address

Dr. Anne Gill, assistant dean of interprofessional education, delivered the commencement address for the Texas Woman's University (Houston campus) graduation on Dec. 15, in which she praised students for their grit and urged them to practice kindness, compassion and gratitude. More than 3,000 graduating students, faculty and family members attended. Gill also is professor of pediatrics and part of the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy, and she is a TWU alumna.

Shah named to mental health board

Dr. Asim ShahDr. Asim Shah, professor and vice chair in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, was appointed chair of the Board of Directors of Mental Health America of Greater Houston for 2020. It is the area's longest serving mental health education and advocacy organization.

Pediatric oncologists earn grant funding

Dr. Stephen MackDr. Robin PariharCookies for Kids' Cancer has awarded grants to two members of the Texas Children's Cancer Center for their research in childhood cancer. Dr. Stephen Mack, assistant professor of pediatrics - hematology and oncology at Baylor, will receive $200,000 for his work on epigenetic and immune checkpoint inhibition in brain tumors. Dr. Robin Parihar, assistant professor of pediatrics - hematology and oncology at Baylor, will receive $200,000 for his work on immunotherapy in pediatric sarcomas.

Jan. 14: Cancer survivorship/aging webinar, DocTalk, Evening with Genetics

Baylor College of Medicine will be closed on Wednesday, Dec. 25, and Wednesday, Jan. 1, in observation of Christmas and New Year's Day.

  • "Canaries in the Coal Mine: What We Can Learn about Aging from Survivors of Childhood Cancer," a National Cancer Institute webinar led by Dr. Monica Gramatges, associate professor of pediatrics - oncology at Baylor and research co-director of the long-term survivor program at Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Centers, will be offered Jan. 14 at 11 a.m. central time.   • The first DocTalk of 2020 focuses on "New Year, New You," with Baylor Medicine's Dr. Marc Feldman, Dr. Lizabeth Riley and dietitian Emily Monfiletto, Jan. 14, noon, Cullen Auditorium at main Baylor. DocTalk is an informal series of lunchtime talks with Baylor experts on a variety of health topics. BCM BeWell Vitality points available for eligible employees.
  • Evenings with Genetics on "Connecting the Dots: Genes and Obesity," with Dr. Claudia Soler-Alfonso, assistant professor of molecular and human genetics, and Dr. Stephanie Sisley, assistant professor of pediatrics - nutrition, 1500 Binz. Light refreshments at 6:30 p.m.; program starts at 7 p.m. Register online.

Jan. 15: MoneyTalk

The MoneyTalk series presented by HR and BCM BeWell continues in 2020 with a discussion of banking basics, Wednesday, Jan. 15, noon, in Cullen Auditorium at main Baylor. BCM BeWell Vitality points available for eligible employees. Questions? Email ask-retirement@bcm.edu.

Jan. 16: Reception for National Medical Association president-elect

Dr. Leon McDougle, president-elect of the National Medical Association and chief diversity officer and associate dean for diversity and inclusion at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, will be on campus for a series of engagements next week, including a presentation at the upcoming session of the Saturday Morning Science community outreach program. The Baylor community is invited to a reception with McDougle to learn about his vision for NMA and to discuss diversity-related topics, Thursday, Jan. 16, 6:30 – 8 p.m. in the DeBakey Library and Museum.

Webinars: Academic educators and the opioid crisis

How can educators in academic medicine make a difference in the opioid crisis? Learn more in a multi-session webcast seminar series presented by the International Association of Medical Science Educators, Thursdays at 11 a.m. through Feb. 6. Topics include increasing the number of physicians who can prescribe medication assisted treatment, incorporating opioid education into health professions curricula, a multidisciplinary discussion on alternatives to opioids, and medical students and substance abuse. Baylor Medicine specialty clinics moving to McNair Campus

Several Baylor Medicine specialty clinics will move this month to the 6th floor of Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center on the McNair Campus, 7200 Cambridge St. Clinics will move Jan. 17 – 20 and will start seeing patients in their new location on Tuesday, Jan. 21. Clinics moving include Acute Care Surgery, Cardiology, Comprehensive Healthcare Clinic, Lung Institute, Cystic Fibrosis, Thoracic Surgery and Vascular Surgery. All administrative and clinic phone numbers will remain the same.

The new class of students in the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program – Nurse Anesthesia started on Jan. 2. This class of 24 trainees brings an average of 3.44 years of R.N. experience and 2.92 years of ICU experience.
