Curry receives American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology award

Dr. Alauna Davis Curry, assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Baylor and the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, recently received the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology's Faculty Innovation in Education Award. The award will help support her development of an educational product to facilitate evaluation of attitudes about race and racism and provide evidence-based practices to help effectively address racism within clinical practice.

Musher honored by Aishel House

Dr. Benjamin Musher, associate professor of medicine – hematology/oncology, was honored by Houston's Aishel House with the Rofeh Yedid Award, which translates from Hebrew into Compassionate Friend and Physician Award. Musher received the award at a ceremony last month in celebration of the organization's new building. Aishel House provides visiting patients to the Texas Medical Center and their families with caring support services, including meals and accommodations, transportation, child care, counseling and more.

Textbook edited by Peacock on chronic diseases of childhood

Dr. Cynthia Peacock, professor of medicine and of pediatrics, was an editor of a textbook, "Care of Adults with Chronic Childhood Conditions," that is now available online. This is one of the first-ever textbooks on the care of young adults with chronic conditions of childhood. Peacock is the director of Baylor's Transition Medicine Clinic.

Schanzer named to new role in psychiatry

Dr. Bella Schanzer was named vice chair for clinical affairs for the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor. In this role, she will oversee and expand clinical services at the Baylor Psychiatric Clinic and Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center and Houston Methodist. She also will collaborate with the leadership at Ben Taub Hospital and the Menninger Clinic to enhance coordination of behavioral health clinical services. Read more online.

Family Medicine at Whole Foods health fair Saturday

Doctors and staff from the Department of Family and Community Medicine will be at a health fair at Whole Foods, 2955 Kirby Drive, Saturday, Jan. 7, from noon to 3 p.m., offering tips on staying healthy during cold and flu season. Stop by to learn important health information and for the chance to win prizes! You'll also get plenty of information about the healthcare services provided at Baylor Family Medicine clinics.

DocTalk Jan. 11

The next DocTalk is Wednesday, Jan. 11, at noon in Cullen Auditorium with Roberta Anding, registered dietitian at Baylor. She will discuss healthy eating in the new year. DocTalk is an informal series of lunchtime talks with Baylor faculty members of a variety of health topics. Eligible employees who attend will receive BCM BeWell Vitality points.

RSVP for You FIRST celebration

The You FIRST Program invites faculty and staff to a casino-themed celebration Thursday, Jan. 19, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Bayou City Event Center, 9401 Knight Road. The event includes a dinner buffet, grand prize of a cruise for two on Carnival Cruise Lines and other prizes, and the opportunity to interact with colleagues. RSVP online by Friday, Jan. 13. Tickets on sale for Anna Deavere Smith performance

Tickets are available for Baylor's Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy presentation of "Let Me Down Easy," a performance, panel and dinner with renowned actress and writer Anna Deavere Smith on Jan. 17 at the Wortham Center. The performance is based on Smith's docudrama examining the body as it relates to health and human existence. Buy tickets online.

Emergency medicine ACLS/BLS Certification Program

Time to renew your advanced cardiac life support or basic life support certification? The Department of Emergency Medicine's ACLS-BLS Program offers semi-monthly ACLS, BLS and combined re-certification in-person courses. The program is American Heart Association certified and offered for $135 for ACLS or $175 for ACLS and BLS combined. Upcoming courses are Jan. 14 and Jan. 28 at 9 a.m. on the main Baylor campus. MLK Day opportunities

Looking for a Martin Luther King Day volunteer opportunity? Check out the Community Events calendar for opportunities throughout the Houston area. You can celebrate Dr. King's legacy by attending the Houston MLK Grande Parade on Monday, Jan. 16. For more information, visit the parade website. The College will be closed that day in observance of the holiday.

Series on stalking awareness

January is Stalking Awareness Month and over this month’s editions of Newslink, Title IX Coordinator Mikiba Morehead will provide information to increase your understanding of stalking and how the College can help. Baylor defines stalking as "engaging in a course of conduct directed at a specific person that causes that person (or a member of that person’s family or household) to fear for their safety or the safety of others." Some examples include receiving unwanted calls, texts, emails and gifts. Learn more on the Baylor Title IX website or by visiting the National Stalking Awareness Month site. Need Help?
