Preventza to chair surgical committee

Dr. Ourania PreventzaDr. Ourania Preventza, professor of surgery, was appointed co-chair of the 2020 Southern Thoracic Surgical Association Program Committee, along with Dr. Harold Burkhart of University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. The committee is responsible for planning the scientific education content of the STSA annual meeting in November.

Singh earns grant targeting undiagnosed cancer

Dr. Hardeep SinghDr. Hardeep Singh, professor of medicine – health services research, received funding from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation for his project to use electronic health record data to quantify how promptly clinicians recognize and act on concerning symptoms or test results that may indicate an undiagnosed cancer. His project is in collaboration with the University College London, the University of Exeter and Geisinger. The award is one of nine recently announced by the foundation to support novel ideas and approaches targeting improved diagnosis of acute vascular events, infections and cancer.

Powers, Yee earn ASH Scholar Award

Dr. Jacquelyn PowersDr. Andrew YeeDr. Jacquelyn Powers and Dr. Andrew Yee, both assistant professors of pediatrics - hematology, have been selected by the American Society of Hematology to receive the ASH Scholar Award. The program funds hematologists who conduct basic, translational and clinical research that furthers the understanding and treatment of blood disorders. They will each receive $150,000. Powers also was selected as an ASH Clinical Research Training Institute Faculty for 2020.

PA students elected as AAPA delegates

Alexandra HuechtemanKarin MadisonAlexandra Huechteman and Karin Madison, both second-year students in the Physician Assistant Program in the School of Health Professions, were elected as student representatives for the 2020 American Academy of Physician Assistants House of Delegates annual meeting. There are 22 student delegates chosen each year from more than 17,000 PA students nationally. They will be voting members of the national body that guides the PA profession in the U.S.

Market Days, sponsored by the Resource Stewardship and Sustainability and the BCM BeWell programs, will be held Tuesday, Jan. 7, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor. This event features local, organic and sustainable products from a variety of vendors.

Naik to lead Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine

Dr. Aanand NaikDr. Aanand Naik, associate professor of medicine, has been selected to serve as section chief of the newly renamed Section of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine in the Department of Medicine. He has served as acting chief since November 2018. Naik is a leader in research, education and clinical practice with a focus on enhancing education and training across the College and its affiliates.

Apply now for Primary Care Research Fellowship

Applications are open for the T-32 Primary Care Research Fellowship in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. The fellowship is open to M.D.s, Ph.D.s, and other doctoral degree holders who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. The program implements a multifaceted training program that comprehensively prepares healthcare professionals for a career in primary care research. For more information, email Dr. Roger Zoorob.

Call for abstracts

  • Advanced Practice Provider Conference: Poster abstracts are being accepted through Jan. 31 for the Texas Children's Hospital Advanced Practice Provider Conference, set for April 2-4 at the TCH Pavilion for Women. This conference provides attendees with both primary and acute care perspectives on pediatric healthcare and the opportunity to collaborate and network with colleagues. Submit abstracts online.
  • Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference: Abstracts are being accepted through Jan. 31 for the seventh annual Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference, April 22, 4 – 8 p.m. at the Texas Children's Hospital Pavilion for Women, fourth floor conference room. Abstracts that focus on quality and safety research projects and program innovations may be submitted by physicians and other healthcare providers, trainees and students, and staff.   • EyeMed Vision Care: Benefits-eligible employees enrolled in EyeMed Vision Care will see some changes in 2020 with the removal of Sears Optical, JCPenney Optical and Stanton Optical from the EyeMed network. However, the network still includes many national, regional and online retailers such as LensCrafters, Pearle Vision, Target Optical and America's Best. Questions?   • BeWell open to partners: Spouses and domestic partners of benefits-eligible employees can participate in BCM BeWell, one of the College's key wellness initiatives, including off-site biometric screenings, challenges and activities.
