COVID-19 Decision-Making and Risk-Mitigation for Patients Considering Left Ventricular Assist Device Placement

Content

This project is an extension to “Dissemination and Implementation of a Patient-Centered Decision Aid for Left Ventricular Assist Device Placement” and aims to develop and implement new supplemental COVID-19 decision-making and risk-mitigation materials for advanced heart failure patients. Under the direction of Jennifer Blumenthal-Barby, Ph.D,  Baylor College of  Medicine will continue to partner with  nine U.S. hospitals to implement a decision aid for patients considering left ventricular assist device (LVAD) placement with added materials to address new decision-making considerations and contexts related to COVID-19. In the wake of COVID-19, patients and clinicians are facing an increased reliance on telehealth and new restrictions and considerations for caregiving, hospital visitation, and follow up appointments. This project will work with key stakeholders to identify new patient decisional needs, develop additional decision-making materials for patients, and build capacity among clinicians to implement these materials in telehealth and in-person settings.
