2020 Diversity Admissions Symposium April 18

The Diversity Admissions Symposium provides assistance to accomplished undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students who have traditionally been underrepresented in medicine and science and are interested in applying to our medical, health professions or graduate biomedical sciences schools. In addition, selected attendees will be given an opportunity to participate in a mock interview with faculty and staff experienced with the admissions process.  

About the Symposium

This free* event is a collaboration between the Office of Institutional Diversity, Inclusion and Equity and leaders from the Student National Medical AssociationLatino Medical Student AssociationAmerican Medical Women's Association, BCM Pride, BCM SpectrumSociety for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) at BCM and Association of Graduate Student Diversity.

The deadline to apply for the 2020 Diversity Admissions Symposium is March 15, 2020.  

* The only expense attendees will need to cover is the TMC parking garage daily rate. 

Purpose and Format

The purpose of the event is to introduce students from diverse backgrounds, including  underrepresented in medicine and science, first-generation, non-traditional, and sexual orientation and gender minority groups, to Baylor College of Medicine as well as support and encourage these students to pursue a medical, health professions or biomedical sciences careers. The event includes a student panel; speakers on admissions pathways, health equity and caring for underserved populations; and skill development breakout sessions covering:

  • Improving your CV/Resume
  • Writing a “standout” personal statement
  • Making the most of your interview visit

In addition, selected attendees applying for the upcoming admissions cycle will be given priority for an opportunity to participate in a mock interview with faculty and staff experienced with medical school, graduate school of biomedical sciences, and school of health professions admissions. Slots will be based upon availability of faculty and staff interviewers.
