Texas Anesthesia Conference for Obstetrics
FRIDAY - SUNDAY, MARCH 14 - 16, 2008
at the Hilton Houston Post Oak Hotel, Houston, Texas
- Activity Director:
Needs and Target Audience
Continuing advances in science and technology place increasing and changing demands on specialists in obstetric anesthesiology. In addition, the focus on quality improvement and patient safety and health outcomes in medicine has created a need for evidence-based clinical information and data to direct quality of care and development of practice guidelines that address standards of care of patients before, during, and after surgical, obstetric, therapeutic, and diagnostic procedures. Thus there is a critical need for leading-edge educational programs to address the acquisition and maintenance of competence in the field.
Based on its review of participant evaluations from the 2007 conference, articles in the medical literature, and clinical practice guidelines, the planning committee identified needs to be addressed. In addition, the planning committee identified topics of interest to practitioners in the field based on the 39th Annual Meeting of the Society for Obstetric and Perinatology (S.O.A.P.), held May 16-19, 2007, in Alberta, Canada. (Drs. Palacios, Suresh, and Wali from Baylor College of Medicine were invited faculty at the 2007 S.O.A.P. meeting.)
This conference is designed to provide an update on current topics and issues in obstetric anesthesiology practice. In addition, given the significant potential adverse outcomes in the management of the difficult airway, demonstration and hands-on training involving proven techniques and equipment will be provided at the difficult airway workshop.
Educational Methods and Objectives
Through the use of lectures, presentations and a syllabus, the participants should be able to describe and discuss:
- Recently updated American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Practice Guidelines for Obstetric Anesthesia;
- Lessons learned from the past and how to apply evidencebased medicine with regard to neuraxial anesthesia and the use of supplemental oxygen, fluid preloading, test dose, sterile precautions, and ultrasound guided technique;
- Prevention of chronic pain after cesarean section;
- Parturients with co-morbidities and anesthetic management in obstetric medicine;
- Ethical dilemmas and anesthetic challenges in obstetrics;
- Key crisis management skills and strategies for prevention of medical errors and airway disasters and improving patient safety in obstetric anesthesia;
- Strategies and management of obstetric hemorrhage; and
- Acquiring advanced airway management skills and maintaining competency utilizing supraglottic devices, supralaryngeal airways, fiberoptic intubation, and learning strategies for facilitating airway exchange and extubation of difficult airways.
Accreditation/Credit Designation
Baylor College of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Baylor College of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 23.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. The presentations, HIV in Pregnancy? Anesthetic Challenges and Pregnant Jehovah?s Witness Patient: Ethical and Anesthetic Dilemmas, have been designated by Baylor College of Medicine for .50 credits of education each in medical ethics and/or professional responsibility.
Evaluation
Evaluation by questionnaire will address program content, presentation, and possible bias.
