Saturday Morning Science

Saturday Morning Science is an exciting community outreach program sponsored by the office of Dr. James L. Phillips. (Video of Dr. Phillips discussing the program.) The program is aimed to motivate inner city kids from the 7th to the 12th grade, to reach their highest potential. We emphasize the importance of a good, solid education and expose them to summer enrichment programs and careers in the biosciences. Our main goal is to reinforce the idea that college is not an option, but an obligation. Download a Saturday Morning Science application.
Most of the lectures and workshops are conducted on the campus of Baylor College of Medicine on Saturday mornings starting in early January and ending in late May. The sessions stress the importance of math and science in a creative and fun way and are taught by physicians, scientists, astronauts, and our medical students.
Topics of discussion included Cell Biology and Histology; Anatomy—lecture and lab; Study Skills & Collaborative Learning; Structural Biology of Macromolecular Imaging; Exploration of the Teenage Brain and Emotions, Body Composition and Nutrition; Summer Enrichment Opportunities; and Choosing a Good College.
We also host a college recruitment fair that is attended by representatives of top notch colleges from Texas and surrounding areas. Colleges and universities that participated in the Career Fair included Texas Southern University, University of Houston, University of Texas at Austin and Dallas, Texas A&M University, Texas Woman’s University, St. Mary’s University, Huston-Tillotson University, University of Oklahoma, Cornell University, San Jacinto College (2-year), and Houston Community College (2-year). These colleges collaborate with us to ensure that together we are all doing our part to help these young people complete their current education and advance to the next level—ultimately matriculating to medical school.
