The Houston Zoo's Newest Elephant Is Named After Baylor College of Medicine
Meet baby Baylor. The 348-pound bundle of joy was born at the Houston Zoo's McNair Asian Elephant Habitat on May 4.
The zoo's elephant care team named the calf Baylor to recognize the ongoing advances made by Baylor College of Medicine's research team to reduce the threat of a potentially lethal elephant herpes virus.
Researchers at BCM have created a rapid test to diagnose elephant herpes, allowing treatment to begin immediately. They are now working to create a vaccine along with more effective treatment. They will continue to analyze blood, trunk washes and urine samples from the zoo elephants to test for, and study, the virus.
Elephant herpes also affects elephants in the wild, and research done here will help elephants across the globe and may lead to a better understanding of the strain of the virus that affects humans.
To learn more about the disease and BCM's efforts to fight it and save elephants, see the previous issue of Solutions.
