Out of This World Science Experiment Generates International Interest

cover of teachers' manual for Butterflies in Space

Four Painted Lady butterfly larvae tagged along with the astronauts on the Space Shuttle Atlantis in November 2009 as a part of an educational experiment for students across the world. Students of all ages followed the "butterflynauts" as they developed from larvae into Painted Lady butterflies on the International Space Station. Classrooms were encouraged to set up groundbased habitats where they would replicate the space experiment and compare the growth and behavior of their butterfly larvae with those living on the habitat on the International Space Station.

Baylor College of Medicine's Center for Educational Outreach was charged with designing the educational aspect of the experiment and providing a teacher's guide with information on ordering larvae, creating the habitat and caring for the larvae. Pictures and video of the larvae growing in space were available on YouTube and BioEd Online for students to observe and follow along.
