The Road Ahead Promises Continued Success
William T. Butler, M.D. For the past 18 months, I have had the privilege of leading Baylor College of Medicine. It was an honor for me to do so, and I am humbled that the Board of Trustees asked me to step back into this leadership role at a time of transition for the College. Like academic centers across the country, we faced financial difficulties during this period, caused in large part by a slumping economy. As an institution with a legacy of excellence and the ability to overcome adversity, we are successfully addressing these complex issues. Many things have been accomplished over the past year and a half, but I believe the most significant is the College's decision to remain independent. We carefully examined all of the options and decided to look to ourselves for answers. That decision was a defining moment for the College. It has required us to become more disciplined in our financial operations, but it has given us full control of our destiny. We are well into the process of securing our future by embracing fiscal responsibility and creating a comprehensive strategic plan to guide us. As part of that plan, the Board of Trustees has unanimously selected Dr. Paul Klotman, chair of the Department of Medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, as the next president and CEO for Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Klotman will assume the presidency on September 1 and will be an outstanding leader for Baylor. Dr. Klotman is a distinguished clinician, an internationally recognized scientist and an outstanding educator. He has conducted basic research at the National Institutes of Health and Mount Sinai School of Medicine on molecular virology and AIDS pathogenesis and will be moving his lab to Baylor to continue his research. He has an indepth understanding of clinical medicine. Under his leadership as chair of medicine, Mount Sinai has experienced consistent growth in its faculty group practice. Dr. Klotman also is a superb educator focused on providing residents and students with the best possible learning experience. Our new president recognizes the things about Baylor that make us special—the outstanding people who make up the College, the excellence demanded in all of our mission areas and the focus on serving our community, both locally and globally. Baylor has had a long history of success and I believe our best days are ahead. Being a part of this tremendous institution will always be a source of great pride for me. William T. Butler, M.D. |
