Believe in BCM Campaign Engages Campusby Erin Blair
Mary Lou Kirkland, a registered nurse in the Scott Department of Urology, shows her support for BCM. I Believe. That's the message sported on lapels and ID tags around campus and across the medical center, where the square pin with the BCM logo has become the season's statement accessory. Cochaired by a trio of faculty leaders, the Believe in BCM campaign asked members of the BCM family to show their pride in the institution by participating in the Annual Fund, the College's source of undesignated funding for all mission areas. The BCM Annual Fund traditionally has enjoyed the support of a small but enthusiastic group of faculty and staff. The campaign's goal was to increase that participation rate to 500 employees by May 31. BCM responded. Institutional Advancement staff handed out 1,227 pins to BCM donors who included security officers, clinicians and Interim President Dr. William T. Butler, who described a gift to the campaign as "a vote of confidence" in the College. Those "votes" totaled more than $220,000 that went to the BCM Annual Fund. CoChair Dr. Susan L. Hamilton, professor and chair of molecular physiology and biophysics at BCM, was the impetus for the campaign when she made a well received appeal to chairs and center directors in December. Meets priority needs"The Annual Fund has been available for priority needs at crucial times," she said. "It helped BCM's SMART (Summer Medical and Research Training) program, supported important research in several key departments and enabled us to issue a request for proposals this fall for pilot clinical translational grants." The overwhelmingly positive response persuaded college leadership to broaden the call for support to all employees. Dr. Rachel Caillouet, vice president for human resources, and Dr. Mark W. Kline, chair of the BCM department of pediatrics and physicianinchief at Texas Children's Hospital, stepped in to cochair the effort with Hamilton. BCM Trustee Drayton McLane's gift of Astros tickets provided extra incentive. While faculty and staff did not have to make an Annual Fund donation to enter a weekly drawing for four free baseball tickets, most did. Dr. Jason Kimata was one lucky winner. An assistant professor in the Department of Molecular Virology and Microbiology, he has worked at BCM for six years. "Giving to the Annual Fund is a habit," he said. "I'm proud to be part of this outstanding institution, and I think it is critical that we invest in the College in order to maintain excellence and to show that we believe in its mission." Susan Robbins, supervisor for the Electron Microscopy Lab, won tickets as well. "It has been a difficult time for everyone at Baylor," she said. "I thought it would feel good to do something positive, to give back and to help in some way." She noted that the campus has changed dramatically during her more than 30 years here, "but the people have remained the same ... friends and family." BCM in the bloodSenior Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Chief Development Officer Lisa Kennedy acknowledged the campaign's timing was deliberate. "We continue to have challenges ahead of us, but we have made significant progress during the past year. We've shown we can stand on our own," she said. "Your participation in the Believe in BCM campaign shows you have BCM in your blood." Since its inception in 2005, the Annual Fund has raised more than $2.4 million for the most immediate needs of the College. |
